Devils Cruise Past Highlanders in 77-60 Victory

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The FDU-Florham men's basketball team earned their first victory of the season by defeating Cairn University 77-60 in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Senior guard Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J.) led the way for the Devils (1-2) with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Furlong filled the stat sheet by adding seven assists, five steals and two blocks in the victory. In addition, the senior guard was named to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday night.

Cairn (0-3) scored the first hoop of the game but never led again as the Devils raced out to 23-13 lead. The Devils remained in control throughtout the opening stanza, led by Furlong, who dominated on both ends of the floor. The senior guard scored 12 points, while grabbing eight boards, handing out six assists and coming up with four steals over the first 20 minutes of action. 

Three Devils reached double-figures in the opening half, as sophomore Michael Barber (Middletown, N.J.) and freshman Veon Lassiter (Elizabeth, N.J.) tallied 12 and 10 points respectively. Barber finished with 15 points, while Lassiter totaled 13, which were both career-highs for the two Devils. FDU-Florham drained eight first-half three-pointers, four by Barber, and entered the break with a 41-21 cushion.

The Devils began the second half with a 21-7 run, which stretched their lead to 39 points with 13:45 to play in regulation. Furlong scored nine points in 10 minutes to help increase the cushion before checking out of the contest. FDU-Florham continued their surge from beyond the arc and finished with a 13-2 advantage on made three-point field goals.

For the Highlanders, Omar Askia netted a game-high 24 points on an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor. The senior guard also led his team with eight rebounds in the loss.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham returns to Madison for their home opener when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology this Tuesday, November 25th at 7 p.m.
