NEWARK, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's soccer team was blanked 4-0 by the 21st-ranked Rutgers University-Newark Scarlet Raiders at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
After dropping their first two matches of the season, Rutgers-Newark (12-2-0, 4-0 NJAC) has now won 12 straight games, while the Devils (2-7-3, 0-1 Freedom) have dropped their last four contests.
The first ten minutes featured quality scoring chances for both teams. First, Raiders leading-scorer
Raphael Araujo, who also ranks fifth in the country in goals scored, nearly put Rutgers-Newark ahead knocked a header off of the crossbar. One minute later, FDU-Florham sophomore
Andrew Ruane (Parsippany, N.J.) drilled a shot off of the post and the game remained scoreless.
In the 42nd minute, Rutgers-Newark broke through when
Diego Moraes delivered a free kick into the box, which Araujo headed into the back of the net for his 14th goal of the season. Three minutes later, the Raiders struck again as
Isaiah Kuris put away a rebound to give the home team a 2-0 edge at the break.
The Raiders increased their lead to 3-0 by taking advantage of a Devils' turnover, which set
Tyler Novak up for a breakaway that he finished into the left side of the net. Rutgers-Newark tacked on one more goal on a header in the 62nd minute to secure the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
JT Bretschneider (Moorestown,N.J.) started in goal for the Devils and made eight stops in the contest. The Raiders held a lopsided 26-5 edge on shot attempts and an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks on the night.
