MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's soccer team played their most complete game of the season on Saturday and defeated Wilkes University 3-2, and in turn, snapped an eight-game winless streak.
Devils' sophomore
Andrew Ruane (Parsippanny, N.J.) was sensational netting the game's first goal and assisting on another score.
FDU-Florham (3-7-3, 1-1 Freedom) played aggressively from the outset and at the 6:40 mark All-Freedom Conference midfielder
Dylan Meyler (Somerdale, N.J.) sent a textbook cross into the box, which Ruane promptly headed into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
The two teams combined for 16 shots over the first 45 minutes of action, however, Ruane's score was the lone goal of the stanza and FDU-Florham led 1-0 at the break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Devils increased their lead to 2-0 when Ruane sent a perfect cross to sophomore
AJ Carnevale (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and Carnevale headed it past Wilkes' goalkeeper
Kyle Romm.
The Devils kept up the pressure and earned several scoring chances over the next few minutes but were unable to find the mark.
On the defensive end, FDU-Florham goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J.) put forth a fearless effort, diving into traffic to make several crucial saves and preserve the Devils lead.
The Colonels (3-11, 1-1 Freedom) finally broke through when
Eric McAnena sent a corner kick into the box that
Hunter Murray headed past Mihalik, which cut the FDU-Florham lead to 2-1.
In the 84th minute, Colonels forward
John Stoner fired off of the crossbar and the Devils countered soon after. Two minutes later,
Connor McIntyre (Orangeburg, N.Y.) netted the game-winner by hammering home a loose ball from in front of the net, which gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.
Wilkes' junior forward
Eddit Metzger made it a one-score game in the 89th minute when he finalized a flurry of shots and corner kicks with a header but it was too little, too late and the Devils held on for the win.
Carnevale's goal was his team-leading third of the season, while Ruane and Meyer netted the first scores of the campaign.
Mihalik made several key saves and turned away nine shots in total to earn the victory.
