#11 Red Hawks Top Devils 4-1

MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham field hockey team was unable to pull off the upset of 11th-ranked Montclair State University on Wednesday night, ultimately falling 4-1 at Sprague Field.

The Red Hawks (10-2, 2-0 NJAC) showed why they are nationally ranked by posting four goals against the strong Devils' (6-6, 1-1 Freedom) defense.

Montclair State's freshman Kaitlyn Strauss continued her outstanding first season by recording a hat trick in the game to increase her team-leading goal total to 13 on the campaign.

The Devils earned the first scoring chance of the game when reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Week Niki Ikeda (Lawrence, N.J.) fired a shot that was saved by Montclair State goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole 42 seconds into play. The Red Hawks quickly countered but the Devils were up to task as senior Katelin Leibner (Jackson, N.J.) stepped in and made a defensive save.

At the 4:42 mark of the first stanza, Ikeda fired from the top of the circle but Brattole was prepared again and made the stop. The Devils continued the pressure and earned several scoring opportunities throughout the first 20 minutes. Sophomore Kim Davis (Long Branch, N.J.) nearly scored from five-yards out on the post but her shot sailed wide.

The Red Hawks responded soon after, when Strauss fired from eight yards out for her first goal of the night. In the 23rd minute, Strauss struck again, this time from 11-yards out, which gave Montclair State a 2-0 advantage. The home team held the two-goal lead at the break but the Devils battled for five shots in the opening stanza.

In the second half, the Red Hawks took charge and limited the Devils to one shot, while attempting nine of their own. The two teams traded chances early in the half but the Red Hawks broke through as junior Maura Johnston found the back of the cage for her 10th goal of the season, which increased the home team's cushion to 3-0.

Less than a minute later, Davis broke through for an unassisted goal, her team-leading seventh of the season, to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, Davis' shot was the lone attempt for FDU-Florham in the second half and Strauss added an insurance goal in the 65th minute to seal the win for the Red Hawks.

FDU-Florham sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Klimaszewski (Green Village, N.J.) made five stops in the loss, while Brattole stopped four shots to earn the victory.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham returns to Freedom Conference action when they visit King's College this Friday, October 10th. Start time is set for 4 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
