Devils Fall to Ospreys in Regular Season Finale

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham field hockey team had their six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night as the Devils were defeated 1-0 by Richard Stockton College in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Devils (12-7, 6-1 Freedom) held a massive 15-6 shot attempt advantage in the contest, however, the Ospreys (7-9, 2-4 NJAC) managed to score the game's lone goal.

Both teams played outstanding defense and limited the offensive units' scoring opportunities. Amy Defnet (Poolesville, Md.) excelled in goal for the Devils and turned away both of the Ospreys' shots in the first half to keep them off of the board.

FDU-Florham registered four shots on goal in the first stanza, two by Kim Davis (Long Branch, N.J.) and one apiece from Gabriella D'Amico (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Alexa Paparo (Voorhees, N.J.) but Stockton's goalkeeper Sara Winters was up to task and thwarted their attempts.

The game's decisive goal came 7:25 into the second half when senior Rileigh Ruff delivered a slap shot into the cage. Ruff's goal came on the Osprey's lone shot attempt of the second half after Alexa Massa sent her a pass on the left wing. Later in the game, Massa made a crucial defensive save to preserve the Ospreys' lead.

With their defense shutting down Stockton's attack, the Devils offense had time to even the score. FDU-Florham turned up the pressure with nine shots, including six on goal. Unfortunately, they were not able to find the equalizer and the Ospreys held on for the one-goal victory.

Winters and senior Liz Stankiewicz combined to make nine saves in goal for the Ospreys. Davis led the Devils attack with three shots on goal, while D'Amico, Paparo and freshman Jodie Crutchley (Ewing, N.J.) each landed two shots on cage.

Next up for the Devils:
The top-seeded Devils host Wilkes University on Wednesday, November 5th in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Tournament. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
