HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The FDU-Florham field hockey team exploded for four first-half goals, en route to a 5-0 victory over Houghton College on Tuesday evening at Burke Field.
The Devils (8-6, 2-1 Freedom) dominated from the first whistle and outshot the Highlanders (3-10, 0-5 Empire8) 8-0 in the first half and 15-1 in the game. FDU-Florham has now outscored their opponents 7-0 during their two-game winning streak.
In the win, sophomore
Kim Davis (Long Branch, N.J.) extended her goal-scoring streak to four games and has a team-high nine goals on the campaign.
The fireworks began 8:35 into action when freshman
Alexa Paparo (Voorhees, N.J.) tipped in
Stephanie Geskes' (Exton, Pa.) shot attempt from the top of the circle and gave the Devils a 1-0 lead. The goal came on the Devils first shot attempt of the game. Four minutes later, Paparo nearly stuck again but was turned away by Houghton goalkeeper
Elizabeth Piszker and the scored remained at one goal.
FDU-Florham kept the pressure on and in the 15th minute, junior
Alicia Grotyohann (Lafayette, N.J.) found the back of the cage, which put the Devils in front 2-0. Grotyohann maneuvered her way behind the defense and fired from the top of the circle for her first goal of 2014.
Later in the half, Devils freshman
Lindsay Brown (Jefferson, N.J.) knocked a shot inside of the right post and past Piszker for her first collegiate goal. Then, in the 28th minute, Davis added to the barrage by hammering home a penalty corner pass from
Niki Ikeda (Lawrence, N.J.), which increased the cushion to 4-0.
In the second half, the Devils tacked on one more as freshman
Marissa Kowalskie (Whippany, N.J.) scored for the first time in her college career when she tipped in a reverse pass from Davis.
Junior goalkeeper
Amy Defnet (Poolesville, Md.) did not need to make any saves to earn the victory, as the FDU-Florham's defense held the Highlanders without a shot on goal.
