No. 7 Devils Use Second-Half Burst to Drive Past Aggies

Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The seventh-ranked FDU-Florham Devils women's basketball team faced their toughest test of the season against Delaware Valley College and overcame a halftime deficit for the first time this season to improve to 18-0 with a 72-54 victory on Wednesday night.

With 10:26 remaining in regulation, the Devils (18-0, 7-0 Freedom) trailed the Aggies (11-7, 4-3 Freedom) 52-50, which is the latest a team has held a lead over FDU this season. However, the Devils rallied with an explosive 22-2 run to close the game and secure the comfortable win. Senior point guard Jalessa Lewis (Irvington, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) was the catalyst for the Devils and finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals to pace the FDU attack.

FDU struggled mightily from downtown and connected on only two of their 15 attempts from long range in the opening stanza. Despite the cold-shooting, the Devils found themselves only trailing by one basket heading into intermission. Delaware Valley forward Brenna Coll led the Aggies with eight first half points and hauled in four rebounds. Coll finished with a team-high 16 points on 8-of-21 shooting.

The Aggies did an excellent job of creating open looks and totaled 20 points in the paint. Trailing 52-50, the Devils offense exploded with baskets by Lewis, Kyra Dayon (Trenton N.J./Trenton Central) and Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville) and built a 58-52 lead. After a free throw by Dayon, Coll converted a layup which resulted in the Aggies final score of the game. FDU tallied the final 13 points of the contest en route to the victory.

Dayon earned her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with five assists, while Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) added 16 points and seven rebounds on 50 percent shooting for the Devils. FDU outrebounded Delaware Valley 51-38 in the game, including 20 offensive boards.
