The Devils (4-4, 1-1 MAC) held on for the win despite a second-half comeback by the Monarchs (4-3, 0-2 MAC), who nearly erased a 20-point deficit in the game's waning minutes. A steal by
Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) and a pair of clutch free throws by Sykes and
Will Green (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) secured the win for FDU.
Led by the hot-shooting of Sykes, FDU held a slim three-point advantage at intermission. The senior finished the opening stanza 7-for-12 from the floor and drilled three shots from downtown en route to 17 first-half tallies.
In the second half, FDU came out swinging, opening the period with a 15-5 run which included three-pointers by Furlong and senior guard
Andrew Stress (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North) and built a 48-35 Devils lead. A pair of free throws by Sykes provided the Devils with their largest lead of the afternoon at 20 points with 11:57 to play in regulation.
With 7:01 remaining, the Monarchs fought back courtesy of an 18-5 run which was capped by a three-pointer delivered by King's freshman guard Nate Oliver. Trailing 72-70, the Monarchs regained possession but Furlong's steal, his fourth of the game, preserved the FDU lead and ultimately the victory.
Green finished the game with 16 points and nine boards for the Devils, while
John Flete (Flemington, N.J./North Hampton CC) and Furlong added 14 and 11 points respectively.
