Box Score MADISON, N.J. – Led by 26 points from senior captain
Trevor Sykes (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boy's) the FDU-Florham men's basketball team pulled out a thrilling overtime victory over the College of Staten Island Dolphins 76-70 on Wednesday night at the Roberta Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Devils (1-2, 0-0 MAC) rallied from five down in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime. In the overtime period,
Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) nailed a huge three-pointer to give the Devils a 66-65 lead which they did not relinquish.
The first half was all Devils, as FDU-Florham led most of the way and forced 11 Dolphin turnovers. Sykes' fourth three-ball of the opening stanza provided the Devils with their largest lead of the game at 32-15. The senior captain finished the first period with 14 points including a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown and the Devils entered intermission with a 34-21 advantage.
The tables turned in the second half when the Dolphins (1-2, 0-0 CUNY) mounted an 18-2 run over a six minute stretch to gain a four-point advantage with 10:16 remaining in regulation.
Trailing 55-50, senior guard
John Flete (Flemington, N.J./North Hampton CC) knocked down a three-pointer as
Will Green (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) was fouled under the basket. Green proceeded to drain both free throws to even the score at 55-55 and cap a rare five-point possession.
With 1:22 to play, Flete delivered when he cashed in a long three-pointer to bring the Devils within one at 59-58. On the Devils next possession, Furlong found a cutting Sykes who knocked down a pull-up jumper to provide FDU-Florham with a 60-59 lead with 41 seconds to go. Furlong led the Devils with four assists on the night.
Dolphins junior guard Javon Cox caused a Devils turnover and followed it with a go-ahead layup to put Staten Island on top 61-60 with six seconds to play in regulation.
Sykes managed to draw a foul with the clock winding down, and after he made one out of two free throws the game headed to overtime.
FDU-Florham outscored the Dolphins 15-9 in the extra period to claim their first victory of the 2013 campaign.
Green picked up his second double-double in three games with 13 points and 13 boards including a perfect 7-of-7 at the line.
Flete chipped in with 11 points and some clutch shooting from long-range. FDU-Florham shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from downtown compared to just 27.3 percent (3-11) by Staten Island.
Cox led the way for Staten Island with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
