Kyra Dayon notched 23 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard
Leigh-Ann Lively added 17 points to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 71-56 win over DeSales in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Devils improved to 3-1 (1-0 Freedom) while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-2 (0-1 Freedom).
FDU got out to exactly the start they were looking for, opening up a 20-11 advantage with 11:42 to go in the first half. DeSales responded with a 7-0 run to cut the score to 20-18 but FDU rebounded by going on a 10-4 run to grab a 30-22 lead with 1:36 remaining. Freshman center
Rachel Groom led the way with six points during the run. After the Bulldogs pulled to within five, 31-26, with 0:22 to go, the Devils scored the final bucket of the half on a layup by Dayon with 0:07 left to take a 33-26 lead into intermission.
The Devils came out hot to start the second stanza, ripping off an 11-4 run to take a 44-30 lead with 16:15 to go. DeSales dug in though and reeled off a 12-0 run to make the score 44-42 with 12:36 remaining but the Devils weren't deterred as they erupted for a 19-7 run to grab a 63-49 edge with 4:37 left. Dayon and Lively were the catalysts in the game-sealing run as the scored seven and five points, respectively. The closest DeSales got the rest of the way was 10 points, 66-56, but FDU hit their foul shots down the stretch to pick up the important conference road win.
Groom finished the contest with the first double-double of her career, as she tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard
Jalessa Lewis added nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at home against King's beginning at 1 pm.
