Box Score OWINGS MILLS, MD - Sophomore running back
KK Smith carried the ball 32 times for 251 yards and three touchdowns to lead Stevenson to a 28-13 victory over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-7 (2-6 MAC) while the Mustangs improved to 2-8 (2-7 MAC).
FDU won the toss and on the opening kickoff, sophomore wide receiver
James Ognibene returned it 59 yards to the Stevenson 32-yard line. On a third-and-12 from the 34, freshman quarterback
Anthony Ognibene scampered 14 yards for a first down to keep the drive alive but the possession stalled and senior kicker
Travis Mullen came on to boot a 30-yard field goal to give the Devils a 3-0 lead with 10:45 left in the first quarter. The FDU defense forced a three-and-out on Stevenson's first drive and the offense marched the ball right back down the field to set up a first-and-goal at the five-yard line. The Devils then stalled again though, committing three penalties and rushing three times for negatives yards, and had to punt from the 40-yard line. The Mustangs responded by going 80 yards in six plays to take a 7-3 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Smith with 1:38 left in the first.
The second quarter started with Stevenson forcing a fumble on the FDU seven-yard line, and Smith took it in from three yards out three plays later to give the Mustangs a 14-3 advantage with 13:00 to go in the half. After a three-and-out by FDU, Stevenson made it 21-3 as they went 53 yards in five plays capped by a 26-yard touchdown run from freshman running back
Kevin Bunton with 8:52 remaining. Ognibene had another big kickoff return on the ensuing kick, exploding for 65 yards to put the ball at the Stevenson 32-yard line. The Devils could only muster nine yards though and Mullen kicked a 42-yard field goal to make the score 21-6 heading into halftime.
The Devils forced a three-and-out to start the third quarter and then went on their best drive of the night, a 12-play, 61-yard excursion to pull to 21-13 on a three-yard touchdown pass from Ognibene to freshman running back
Nick DeFeo with 7:14 to go in the third. The highlights of the drive were 15 and 11 yard runs from senior running back
Jon Bennett and two-yard run from Bennett on a fourth-and-one that kept the Devils in business. Stevenson took the momentum right back though, as Smith ripped off a 56-yard touchdown run on the third play of the ensuing drive to give the Mustangs a 28-13 lead with 5:39 left in the third quarter.
FDU had five possessions left in the game at that point and moved the ball into Stevenson territory all five times but couldn't get any more points on the board. The best of the five opportunities came with 6:00 left in the game after freshman quarterback
Dan Pastor hit Bennett for a 67-yard gain to the Mustang 16-yard line but the Stevenson defense, as they did for the final quarter and a half, rose up and kept the Devils out of the end zone.
Bennett finished the game with five catches for 125 yards and 10 carries for 59 yards while Ognibene and Pastor combined to go 12-of-24 for 183 yards with a touchdown and an interception. On defense, as he has done all season, junior linebacker
Mike Mancino led the way with a game-high 13 tackles while senior linebacker
Charlie Thomas added nine stops.
In what was just announced Saturday evening, the Devils will return to action on Friday, November 16, 2012, at home for Senior Night against William Paterson beginning at 7 pm. Each squad had a game canceled due to Hurricane Sandy and because FDU's original opponent, Widener, won the MAC and will be playing in the NCAA Tournament, the Devils and Pioneers have agreed to meet for an extra game.
