DOYLESTOWN, PA – Down 70-63 with just under a minute left in the game, Delaware Valley scored 10 of the final 12 points in the game to beat the College at Florham Devils by a score of 73-72 in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-5 (0-1 Freedom) while the Aggies improved to 2-3 (1-0 Freedom)
With the score tied at 10-10 and just over five minutes gone by in the first half, Delaware Valley went on a 19-10 run to open up a 29-20 lead with 5:47 to go. The Aggies held a 33-26 advantage exactly two minutes later but FDU closed the half with a three-pointer by junior guard Adam Katz and a layup from sophomore forward Derek Hall to cut their deficit to 33-31 heading into the locker room.
Delaware Valley started strong to begin the second stanza, opening with a 13-6 run to grab a 46-37 lead. FDU then went on a 21-12 run, thanks to six points from Hall to tie the game at 58-58 with 6:48 left in the game. The Devils then took control of the action, ripping off a 12-5 run to grab a 70-63 advantage with 0:49 remaining. Senior center Ricky Fetske had seven points in the run while Katz had the other five. That's when the tide turned though, as Delaware Valley knocked down two free throws then forced a turnover that they turned into a three-pointer to close to within 70-68 with 0:31 to go. After two free throws by Katz made it 72-68, the Aggies dropped in a layup and then forced another FDU turnover to gain possession with 0:11 left. Freshman guard Phil Jackson then hit a three-pointer from the corner with 0:03.3 left to put Delaware Valley up 73-72. The Devils tried to run a play for Katz on their last possession but the Aggies came up with another turnover to escape with the win.
Katz finished with 23 points, six assists and six rebounds while Fetske added 16 points and seven boards. Hall added 12 points and six boards.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at home against Wilkes beginning at 3 pm.
