MADISON, NJ - Senior forward
Brittany Kanickij (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) scored two goals in the final 0:27 of the first half to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead as the top-seeded College at Florham Devils held on to beat fourth-seeded Misericordia in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 14-5-2 while the Cougars dropped to 12-6-2. FDU will now host #3 Manhattanville in the Finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday after the Valiants went on the road and upset #2 Eastern.
The Cougars got on the board first just 2:59 into the contest when sophomore forward
Sam Helmstetter (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) knocked in a pass from sophomore midfielder
Laura Roney (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades). The momentum of the game was clearly in Misericordia's corner until Kanickij found the back of the net off a rebound at the 44:33 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Then, with 0:05 left in the half, Kanickij fired a shot at goal from 35 yards out that went just over the Misericordia goalie's hands to give FDU a 2-1 advantage. Each squad had opportunities to score in the second half, but for the most part FDU controlled the action and pace of play. The Devils held a 14-10 edge in shots while the teams were tied in corner kicks, 6-6.
Junior goalkeeper
Lauren Albrecht (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) picked up the win, making three saves.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at home in the Finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament when top-seeded FDU hosts third-seeded Manhattanville beginning at 1 pm.
