Huge First Half Leads Cougars Past Devils, 5-2

DALLAS, PA - The Misericordia Cougars scored four first half goals to beat the College at Florham Devils, 5-2, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  The loss means that if the Devils beat Eastern next Saturday they will make the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament.  A loss or tie against Eastern and the Devils will need help to qualify from other teams.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 9-6-1 (3-2-1 Freedom) while the Cougars improved to 10-7 (3-3 Freedom).

Misericordia started the scoring 8:34 into the game and made it 2-0 just five minutes later.  The Cougars upped their lead to 3-0 at the 23:35 mark before making it 4-0 with 13:53 left before halftime.  FDU got on the board with 2:07 left in the first half when sophomore midfielder Josh Corpuz (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) found the back of the net.  The Devils then made it 4-2 only 4:18 into the second stanza when senior defender Matt Kinsley (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) scored.  The Cougars got an insurance goal to make it 5-2 with 21:38 left in the game.  The Devils held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks but trailed in shots (16-9).  FDU also had five yellow cards and a red card issued against them while Misericordia only had one yellow.

Senior goalkeeper Kevin Herbert (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) made five saves in goal.

The Devils return to action on Monday, October 25, 2010, at home against Richard Stockton in non-conference action beginning at 7 pm.
