James Throws Lions to 58-28 Win Over FDU

EWING, NJ - Senior quarterback Chris James (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) went 14-of-19 for 358 yards and three touchdowns to help The College of New Jersey to a 48-7 halftime lead on their way to a 58-28 win over the College at Florham Devils on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-2 while the Lions improved to 2-0.

TCNJ started the game with the ball on their own 29 yard line and on their second play James hit senior wide receiver Colin Weber (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) for a 71-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.  The Devils moved into Lion territory on their first series but stalled and after an eight-yard punt, TCNJ took over on their own 40 yard line.  The Lions then moved the ball down the field in six plays to take a 13-0 lead with 6:55 left in the first quarter, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Justin Doniloski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills).

After a three-and-out by the Devils on their next possession, TCNJ again took over on their own 40 yard line.  On the third play, James and Weber hooked up for a 44-yard touchdown pass that gave the Lions a 20-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter.  The Devils looked like they were going to get on the board on their next possession when senior quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) found senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) for what looked like a 33-yard touchdown pass but Reed fumbled on the one yard line and TCNJ recovered in the end zone for a touchback.  Three plays into their ensuing possession, James connected with senior wide receiver Mark Gardner (Flemington, NJ/Bishop Dunne) for a 66-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 27-0 lead with 0:32 left in the first quarter.

FDU moved into to TCNJ territory to begin the second quarter but stalled and had to punt with the Lions taking over on their own two yard line.  On their fourth play, Doniloski sprung loose for a 90-yard touchdown run to put TCNJ up by a score of 34-0 with 10:35 left in the first half.  The Devils turned the ball over on downs with 8:46 to go in the second quarter and TCNJ took over on their own 39 yard line.  The Lions drove to the FDU 35 yard line but missed a 52-yard field goal attempt.  FDU got their first points just two plays into the next drive when Winters threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) to cut the TCNJ lead to 34-7 with 6:23 remaining in the first half.

The Lions started their next possession at their own 38 yard line and eight plays later, senior running back Chase Misiura (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) ran it in from three yards out to give TCNJ a 41-7 lead with 3:05 to go in the half.  Winters was intercepted on FDU's first play of the next series and the Lions gained possession on their own 46 yard line.  TCNJ cashed in on the turnover when James ran it in from 11 yards out to put the Lions up 48-7 with 0:16 to go in the half.

The Devils got the ball to begin the third quarter and drove it down to the TCNJ 15 yard line before Winters was picked off in the end zone for a touchback.  The FDU defense forced a three-and-out and after a TCNJ pun the Devils started on their own 35 yard line. Winters led the Devils down the field and ran it in from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 48-14 with 6:06 left in the third quarter.  The Lions got three of those points right back though as senior kicker Marc Zucconi (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) kicked a 25-yard field goal to give TCNJ a 51-14 lead with 1:55 left in the third.

Junior left tackle James Sullivano (Howell, NJ/Howell) lined up as a fullback and took it in from the one yard line on FDU's first possession of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 51-21 with 13:42 left in the game.  Winters cut it to 51-28 with 7:50 remaining in the game on a one yard scamper.  TCNJ wasn't done yet though as freshman running back Kevin Brown (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) had a 34-yard touchdown run to put the Lions up 58-28 with 2:35 to go.

For TCNJ, Weber had six receptions for 199 yards and two scores while Gardner had four grabs for 119 yards and one touchdown.  Doniloski finished with nine carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns.  The Lions also had 708 yards of total offense which is their most in school history and the most FDU has allowed on defense in school history.

Winters went 27-of-41 for 342 yards to go along with one touchdown and two interceptions.  He also had 15 carries for 69 yards and two scores.  With his 27 completions, Winters is now first All-Time in FDU history in passing completions.  Bukowiec finished with seven catches for 94 yards and a score.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, September 26, 2009, with their homecoming game against Apprentice beginning at 1 pm.
