DOYLESTOWN, PA – Senior quarterback Mike Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) went 18-of-23 for 203 touchdowns with three touchdowns and one interception through the air while rushing for 62 yards on seven carries and a score on the ground to lead Delaware Valley to a 41-17 win over the College at Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-4 (0-2 MAC) while the Aggies improved to 4-1 (2-0 MAC)
Delaware Valley opened the game with the ball and drove the length of the field before the FDU defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs on a fourth-and-one from the FDU two yard line. On the Devils' second play, junior running back Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) ripped off a 66-yard run to take the ball down to the Delaware Valley 15 yard line. Three plays later, senior quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) connected with junior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) for a seven-yard touchdown to give FDU a 7-0 lead with 8:05 left in the first quarter. The drive went 98 yards on only five plays.
The Aggies responded right away though, driving 76 yards in seven plays capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Isgro to sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Hall (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:00 left in the first quarter. FDU went three-and-out on their next series, and the Aggies took over on the FDU 47 yard line. Delaware Valley made it 13-7 on the first play of the second quarter when Isgro ran it in from six yards out to finish a seven play, 47 yard drive.
The Devils moved into Aggie territory on their next possession and faced a third-and-ten from the 33 yard line when Winters scrambled to his right and threw back across his body for a 33-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Ryan Cushman (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) to give FDU a 14-13 lead with 8:30 left in the first half. The Devils drive went 90 yards in 15 plays. A solid kickoff return and a face mask penalty gave the Aggies great field position on the FDU 37 yard line to begin their next series but the Devil defense came up with a sack on third down and Delaware Valley had to punt. The Devils were forced to punt on their next possession and the Aggies took over on their own 43 yard line with 2:30 left in the half. Delaware Valley then drove 57 yards and went back on top, 20-14, with 0:42 left before intermission when junior running back Matt Cook (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) plunged in from a yard out.
FDU got the ball first in the second half and picked up one first down before they had to punt. The Aggies immediately converted, taking a 27-14 lead with 6:36 left in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Isgro to senior wide receiver Chad Peterman (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland). With the Aggies driving again, senior cornerback Tim Poss (Manchester, NJ/Manchester) forced a fumble that senior safety Jason Glezman (Lincroft, NJ/Mater Dei) recovered giving the Devils the ball on the Delaware Valley 47 yard line. On third-and-nine Winters hit Scamporino for a 22-yard gain down to the Aggie 24 and then on fourth-and-five he connected with senior wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) for a six-yard gain to the Aggie 14. FDU faced another fourth down, this time a fourth-and-ten, but Winters came through with a 13-yard scramble down to the one yard line. A false start on FDU pushed the ball back to the six, an offensive pass interference penalty placed the ball on the Aggie 21 and another false start made the spot the Aggie 24. Winters hit Cushman for 15 yards to the nine and on fourth down, freshman kicker Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) booted a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 27-17 with 13:16 left in the game.
On Delaware Valley's ensuing possession, Isgro was intercepted by sophomore linebacker Ryan Daly (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) on the Aggie 38 yard line after senior defensive end James Gartland (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) tipped the pass. On fourth-and-six, Winters was sacked back at the 40 yard line as the Devils turned the ball over on downs. The Aggies then marched down the field and put the game away when Isgro hooked up with senior running back Butch Whiteside (Folcroft, PA/Interboro) for a 16-yard touchdown to give Delaware Valley a 34-17 lead with 7:51 left in the game. Delaware Valley then tacked on another seven when sophomore running back Tyler Neal (Hershey, PA/Hershey) rushed for a ten-yard touchdown to make it 41-17 with 4:54 remaining.
Winters finished 18-of-34 for 135 yards and two touchdowns through the air to go along with 17 carries for 19 yards on the ground. Junior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) had 13 rushes for 71 yards. Bukowiec ended the day with six catches for 30 yards while Cushman had four grabs for 58 yards and a score. Sophomore linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Iona) had a game-high 12 tackles, two for loss, and a half sack while junior cornerback Matt Porricelli (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) made 11 stops.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at home against Widener beginning at 1 pm.
