Softball Tops Montclair State For First Time

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The FDU-Florham softball team split its doubleheader against Montclair State University Wednesday afternoon on the road, as the Devils took home Game 1 2-1, but fell 5-4 in Game 2.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 1)
  • Jada Lambright led the way for the Devils with a 2-for-3 game and one RBI. 
  • Alison Wysocki finished the day with one hit and one RBI.
  • Mollie Reece went 1-for-2 with one hit and one run scored.
  • Grace Capparelli went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
  • Gina Abinanti earned her sixth as she threw six innings and allowed just one earned run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Devils got on the board in the top of the first inning when Lambright smoked a double down the left field line, bringing home Reece for the first run.
  • In the second, Capparelli led off the inning with a double to left field. Wysocki then hit a clutch two out single up the middle to score Capparelli and give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
  • Abinanti tossed the first six innings and allowed only one run on five hits with two strikeouts before giving way to Sydney Grifone who closed out the seventh to earn the save.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 2)
  • Riley Signor had a perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
  • Kylie Berg went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single in her only plate appearance.
  • Lambright secured one more double in Game 2, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored.
  • Grifone tossed 2 innings in relief as she allowed no runs on just one hit with no walks and struck out five. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Devils got on the board first on a double down the left field line from Lambright, scoring Giulia Olear. 
  • Montclair State then answered with hits to score two runs in the bottom of the first.
  • In the top of the fourth, with the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored Signor to tie the game and advanced Victoria Fantozzi to third and Grace Capparelli to second.
  • Montclair answered again in the bottom of the fourth scoring three runs to take the lead once again.
  • Despite a double from Signor in the seventh and Wodecki hitting a sac fly to bring Lambright home to cut the deficit to 5-4, Montclair State took Game 2 by a final of 5-4.
GAME NOTES
  • Lambright broke the all-time career doubles mark with her 37th-career double in Game 1. The previous record of 36 stood for the last 25 years. 
  • FDU's win in Game 1 was the first time in program history that the Devils defeated the Red Hawks, snapping a 32-game losing streak.
UP NEXT
The Devils return to action on Thursday, April 9 as FDU hosts Drew University. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 3 p.m.
