Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against TCNJ

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham baseball team take one from TCNJ in the first two games of the three-game series Saturday morning.

Game One:
Devils Highlights
  • Junior John Rolli once again showed out at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
  • Junior Peter Longo had a solid Game One, going 1-for-3 with a double, three RBI and one run scored.
  • Junior Tommy Sica and sophomore Xavier Diaz both contributed to the offense, with Sica going 1-for-4 and Diaz going 1-for-3.
  • Senior Chris Kaponis throws a gem for the Devils, going 6 1/3 innings, while giving up three runs and striking out 10.
How It Happened
  • Following a scoreless first inning, the Devils found themselves down two after the Lions strung together a couple hits. The deficit didn't last long as the offense produced four runs in the bottom of the second. Capitalized by a three-run double off the bat of junior Peter Longo, the team found themselves with a 4-2 lead.
  • As both teams continued to dominate defensively, the game remained unchanged until the Lions made it a 4-3 game after an RBI single from Nate McLaughlin. The Lions' rally was quickly ended after sophomore Tyler Gaetano came out of the pen and got an inning ending double play.
  • The offense had one more scoring inning as first year Andrew Parisi scored Rolli on a sacrifice fly to center field. In the top of the ninth, senior Jake Stollar put the finishing touches on the game and earned his second save of the year as the Devils go onto win Game one 5-3.

Game Two:
Devils Highlights
  • Junior Tommy Sica led the way in Game Two, going 3-for-5 with one run scored.
  • Sophomore Xavier Diaz continued his productive day, going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
  • First year Noah Fiorillo also had a solid Game Two, going 2-for-4 with one walk, one RBI and one run scored.
  • Junior Evan Sabo kept the Devils in the game, providing two innings out of the pen and not allowing a run to score.
How It Happened
  • A home run to right field off the bat of Joe Tammaro put the Devils in a deficit early in the game. In the bottom of the second, Parisi tied the game up at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Fiorillo.
  • The team fell behind once again in the top of the third and never could quite get back on top. A big inning from the Lions in the top of the sixth extended their lead to 5-1, capitalized by a bases clearing double.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the offense scored two to bring the game within reach at 5-3. Longo once again came in clutch for the team, scoring 2 runs off a single to center field. Unfortunately, these runs were given right back to the Lions as they had a second consecutive three-run inning in the top of the seventh to make the game 8-3.
  • The bottom of the seventh was the last time the Devils would score all game. RBI from Fiorillo and first year Christian Zamrok put the team back in the game, making it 8-5. Even though the Devils strung together a few hits in the last couple innings, it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Game Notes
  • With one-fourth of the season done, this is the best start the Devils have had since the 2022 season (7-3).
