MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The FDU-Florham softball team won twice more on its spring break trip as the Devils topped Stevenson 6-3 followed by a 7-6 win over St. Joseph's Long Island on Sunday morning.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS (vs Stevenson)
- Riley Signor went 3-for-4 with a triple and one RBI.
- Abigail Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with 4 RBI on the day.
- Sydney Grifone started and got the win as she went three innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
- Kelly Cornog closed out the final four innings as she allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mustangs jumped out in front early as a sac fly from Rebecca Maiorano played Olivia Munoz.
- In the second, FDU answered with a two-run single from Rodriguez to take a 2-1 lead.
- In the third, Signor tripled home Jada Lambright to push ahead 3-1, but in the bottom half, Stevenson's Tessa Boswell singled home a run to cut the FDU lead to 3-2.
- Hailey Wodecki knocked in a run with an RBI-single in the fifth to plate Giulia Olear, but again, the Mustangs answered with a run in the home half to keep a one-run game at 4-3.
- Then in the sixth, Rodriguez brought home one more run on a sac fly to make it a 5-3 game. On the same play, Grace Capparelli scored on a Stevenson error to make it a 6-3 game, and the Devils went on to win by the same score.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS (vs St. Joseph's LI)
- Mollie Reece went 2-for-4 with two RBI
- Olear had a 3-for-3 day with an RBI while Lambright went 2-for-3 and added one RBI
- Capparelli notched two hits on the day as well.
- Giana Abinanti earned the win for the Devils in a complete game effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FDU tallied the game's first run on an RBI-single from Wodecki to ptate Lambright.
- The Golden Eagles answered in the top of the second with a two-run double from Brooke Bove followed by an RBI-single from Jacqueline Flannery to take a 3-1 lead.
- After Lambright tripled home Olear in the third, she scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 3-3.
- In the fourth, Reece drove home two with a two-run single to take a 5-3 lead. Olear followed suit with an RBI-single to drive in Reece and the Devils now commanded a 6-3 lead.
- The Golden Eagles answered back in the top of the fifth with three runs, but Capparelli came around to score on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth and that was the deciding run as the Devils went onto win 7-6.
GAME NOTES
- Everyone in the FDU starting lineup reached base either on a hit or a walk.
UP NEXT
FDU continues its Myrtle Beach trip with a triple-header on Tuesday, March 17 as the Devils play Mount Aloysius College at 11 a.m. followed by SUNY Polytechnic Institute at 1 p.m. and then ending the day with a game against Centenary at 3 p.m.
