Baseball Holds off Saint Elizabeth's Comeback in Season Opener, 9-8

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham baseball team opened its 2026 season against Saint Elizabeth at home as the Devils scored nine runs highlighted by a three-run home run from Peter Longo.
 
Devils Highlights
  • Longo led the Devils offense going 2-for-5 including his three-run shot to left field and tallied four RBI
  • Sophomore Xavier Diaz helped the Devils' cause, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk.
  • Both senior Ryan Johnston and junior John Rolli tallied two hits and two runs, with Rolli contributing an RBI.
  • Senior Chris Kaponis posted nine strikeouts through 4.1 innings, while fellow senior Nick Rizos slammed the door in the ninth inning to earn his first collegiate save.
How It Happened
  • After Kaponis logged five Ks through the first two innings, Longo drove in FDU's first run of the season with a double to center to plate Andrew Parisi. The Eagles answered back in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run from Trevor Policastro to knot the game at 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, Longo launched a three-run home run to deep left to put the Devils on top 4-1. Then in the top of the fifth, a Devils error followed by consecutive Eagles singles cut the FDU lead to 4-3. In the bottom half, Diaz tripled home Johnston who reached earlier on a single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch, to make put the Devils back ahead by two at 5-3.
  • In the sixth, FDU extended its lead to 6-3 after an Eagles' error allowed Nick Colbert to score after he reached with a one-out walk. 
  • Saint Elizabeth cut the lead once again in the seventh after another FDU error allowed for two unearned runs to score. Then in the eighth, the Eagles took their first lead of the game after a two-run single made it a 7-6 game.
  • The Devils answered in the bottom half of the eighth with an RBI single from John Rolli and the biggest swing of the day, a two-run double from Diaz to put the Devils up 9-7 heading to the ninth.
  • In the ninth, despite giving up three hits and a run in the final frame, a 4-to-3 double play ended the game and gave FDU its first win of 2026.  
Game Notes
  • All four pitchers combined for a total of 12 strikeouts through nine innings, while only giving up two walks.
