Towson, MD (May 7)- For the semifinals round of the Division III ECAC Men's Lacrosse Championship, the three-seeded FDU-Florham Devils Men's Lacrosse team traveled to the second-seeded Goucher Gophers and found that their season came to an end at the expiration of the final quarter, as the Devils lost 19-10.
FDU-Florham (10-7) had
Luke Dugan (Washington, NJ) on the attack as he notched two goals, along with
Brenden Fabin (Randolph, NJ), who added a total of 13 shots.
Goucher (10-8) had star, Jacob Morgan, score eight goals, and another Gopher scored five goals in its win.
The host team was able to strike twice within the first three minutes of action. Moments later, FDU-Florham took advantage of their face-off win by
Nick Matthew (Kinnelon, NJ) and took aim twice before one of
Ronnie Trisuzzi (Rockaway, NJ) shots whizzed past the goalie for the Devils' first goal.
FDU-Florham eventually tied Goucher at a 3-3 score, but slipped within the last 3 minutes to see a 6-3 score end the quarter.
The score continued to climb for both teams, and even saw the game as close as a one-goal differential with 7:49 remaining. However, the Gophers made a two-goal game before heading into the half, 9-7.
The Devils quickly made a stance heading into the next quarter of play and tied the game at 9-9. Goucher quickly reacted and scored four goals with three minutes to go ahead 13-9, and eventually ended the quarter at a 15-9 score.
FDU-Florham was only able to notch one additional goal as Fabin netted his final collegiate goal, but It was not enough as Goucher kept the offensive attack and moved on to the championship round with a 19-10 victory.
Collecting his 60 minutes between the pipes was
Anthony Pieroni (Branchburg, NJ), who faced 38 shots and collected 11 saves in the final game of the season.
As a team, FDU-Florham compiled out shot with 44 shots, 39 ground balls, and won 23 face-offs.
Goucher as a team generated 30 shots, 32 ground balls, and won 9 face-offs.
FDU-Florham finished the season with a 10-8 record, and it was the first time since 2011 (14 years) that the Devils have had over 10 wins in a season. This postseason appearance was the first in 23 years that the Devils have participated in ECAC play.
