Baseball Sees Milestones And Records As They Ram Delaware Valley, 14-7

Doylestown, Pa. (April 25) – The Devils (15-22) (7-12 MAC Freedom) traveled to Doylestown to take on Delaware Valley to start their final MAC Freedom series of the season, came away victorious, as they rammed the Aggies, 14-7.

Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) went 1-4, with that one being his 100th hit in his collegiate career. Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) hit 2-5, with 2 RBIs from a home run. Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) went 2-4 with 3 RBIs, including a triple.

The Aggies put up the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the first, hitting two doubles and one single.

The Devils immediately responded in the top of the second. Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) singled to kick off the inning. Colbert hit in a fielder's choice, and with a runner on base, Diaz crushed a home run over the right field wall to add two runs to FDU's tally. Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) walked, Matthew Bond (Ridgewood, NJ) singled, and Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) walked to load the bases, which lead Giovenco to hit a fielders choice to score Geist, and both him and Muratore advanced off an error. Zach Ganca (Merrick, NY) hit a single down the middle to score both of them, and all of a sudden the Devils were leading, 5-3.

The top of the third didn't see any runs from FDU, but did see a milestone, as Colbert slapped a double to earn his 100th hit in his collegiate career.

They did see runs from the top of the fourth, though, as the inning started out with back-to-back triples by Muratore and Giovenco. Ganca reached on an error to score Giovenco, and John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) punched a double to score Ganca. Cowles walked, and Colbert hit a sacrifice fly to score Rolli, which expanded the Devils lead to 9-3.

The Devils added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Bond singled to kick off the inning, and after Giovenco was hit by a pitch, Ganca hit a sacrifice fly to score Bond and make the game 10-3 in favor of FDU.

Delaware Valley got a run back in the bottom of the off a double steal to shrink the lead down to six, but the Devils added four more runs in the top of the seventh. Geist led off the inning with a single, and scored from a triple by Bond. Giovenco singled to let Bond in, and after Ganca walked and both him and Giovenco stole bases, Rolli hit a sacrifice fly to score Giovenco, and Ganca scored on a wild pitch, putting FDU up by 10, with it being 14-4.

Delaware Valley added one more run in the bottom of the seventh from a single to make it 14-5, and two more in the bottom of the ninth from a triple and a groundout, but that was it, and FDU took the first game of the series 14-7.

Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) started the game for the Devils, and earned his first win, throwing for five innings and striking out eight. Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) came out of the bullpen to claim another milestone, as he now has the most appearances in a season in Devils history. Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ), Evan Sabo (Hillsborough, NJ), and Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ) all pitched an inning out of the bullpen.
