Madison, NJ (April 26) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (17-22) (9-12 MAC Freedom) celebrated senior day by welcoming Delaware Valley to Naimoli Ballpark. They came away with both wins, 4-1 and 5-0, and the overall sweep of the series.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) showed up for his senior day, going 3-7 with 2 RBIs, both of them from a two-run home run.
Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) did the same, as he went 2-6 with 3 runs scored, and an RBI from a solo home run.
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) went 3-6, with two RBIs.
Game One
Game one started early for FDU, as they scored a run in the bottom of the first.
Zach Ganca (Merrick, NY) got on base with a single to left field, and after stealing second and making third on a wild pitch,
Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) singled to bring him in and give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
FDU doubled their lead in the bottom of the second. Geist was hit by a pitch, and after stealing second and reaching third on a groundout, Muratore drove him in with an infield single to make the lead 2-0 in favor of FDU.
The Aggies found a run in the top of the fourth from a double, but FDU responded immediately in the bottom half, as Geist being the first batter of inning crushed a ball that bounced off the the scoreboard for a solo home run to make it 3-0 Devils.
The Devils found one more run in the game, as in the bottom of the fifth, Santos got on base with a single, and was driven in by
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) on a double to make the game 4-1. That was the score when the game ended, and FDU took the series win and looked for the series sweep in the next game.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) started the game for FDU and pitched six great innings, only allowing one run and striking out nine batters.
Jake Stollar (Flemington, NJ) pitched the final inning and allowed no runs to earn the save.
Game Two
FDU had to wait an extra inning but got ahead in the bottom of the second.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) and Geist both singled to put runners on the corners, and
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) singled to score Diaz and make the game a 1-0 lead for FDU.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, where FDU pounced.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) earned an infield base hit, and with two outs, Santos crushed a ball over the left field fence for a home run to give FDU the 3-0 lead.
FDU plated two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colbert reached base on a hit by pitch, and after Geist reached on an error that sent Colbert to third, Long placed down the perfect sacrifice bunt to score Colbert. Muratore punched a single down the middle to score Geist, and FDU would now lead the game 5-0. That would be the final score, as FDU swept both the doubleheader and the series against Delaware Valley, their first conference sweep since Delaware Valley in 2022.
Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NY) started game two for FDU and earned the win, going for five innings and striking out seven batters.
Trevor Kobryn (Hillsborough, NJ),
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ),
Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ), and
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) all pitched out of the bullpen for their senior day appearances, and all performed greatly for their final home games, not allowing a single run.
FDU will play their final game of the season in Hackettstown, NJ on April 29
th, as they will take on Centenary (NJ). First pitch will be at 3:30 PM.
