Madison, NJ (April 22 ) – For MAC Freedom Doubleheader action, the FDU-Florham Devils Softball Team (19-14, 5-7 MAC Freedom) hosted the Misericordia Cougars (21-12, 6-6 MAC Freedom) and was able to take a needed game one by a 2-0 score, but allowed the Cougars to pounce in game two to give the Devils a 8-4 loss.
Game 1:
Misericordia, being the away team, had the chance to put up the first hit but failed as they only put a batter on first by a walk. FDU-Florham took the opportunity and recorded the first hit of the game with a double to left field from
Kylee Berg (Bordentown, NJ).
FDU-Florham was also the first team to have its runners step on home plate. A double to left field coming off the bat of
Hailey Wodecki (Southampton, NJ) allowed the two Devils on first and second to be awarded a run which gave the 2-0 score.
Misericordia was only able to connect on one hit in the top of the 4
th inning and remained quiet on offense, which gave FDU-Florham game one of the double header.
Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ) (13-7) tied her season high strikeout record (15) but also threw out 118 pitches in 7.0 innings to claim the win.
Game 2:
The first two innings of the game remained scoreless, even with each team's offensive momentum brewing in the second inning with at least one hit.
Both the Devils and Cougars came to life in the third inning as Misericordia put up three runs, and FDU added two of their own with a 2-run RBI double from
Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY).
Misericordia kept their bats warm even into the fifth and seventh innings as they added five runs to help cushion their lead, 8-2.
In a final effort to secure the conference doubleheader sweep, junior
Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) found a spot to lay the ball in right field, bringing in the final two runs for FDU-Florham. With the shy effort, the Devils were handed an 8-4 loss, causing a win on the day for each team.
Pitching in game two for FDU once again was Sinatra (13-8) who gave an effort in all seven innings with 5 strikeouts over 121 pitches.
FDU-Florham's next contest will be the shortest distance traveled yet this year, as they will visit Drew for a Madison Ave non-conference contest on Thursday, April 24 with the first pitches being thrown at 3pm and 5pm.
