Madison, NJ (April 19) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (14-21) (6-12 MAC Freedom) battled with Lebanon Valley in a doubleheader to close out their series against them at home. They ended up splitting games, as the Flying Dutchman picked up game one 13-4, while the Devils took game 2, 9-6.
Zach Ganca (Merrick, NY) hit at a 3-9 rate, but made a difference, crushing a three-run home run in game two to put FDU comfortably ahead.
Aaron Santos went 2-8 between the two games, hitting an inside-the-park home run in game two.
Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) went 3-7, while picking up an RBI.
Game One
Game one saw Lebanon Valley jump ahead first, putting up five runs in the top of the first, off of two triples, a double, and single. They put two more runs up in the top of the third from a hit by pitch, and a sacrifice, and one more in the top of the fifth from a single, going ahead 8-0.
FDU got the bats going in the bottom of the fifth.
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) walked, and
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) singled to send him to second.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) singled to load the bases, and Ganca punched a single through the middle to score Longo.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) singled to score Muratore, and Cowles and
John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) both walked to score Giovenco and Ganca to cut the lead in half, with the Flying Dutchman only leading by four.
Unfortunately, that was all the offense could come up with in game one. Lebanon Valley added five more runs, one in the top of the sixth from a single, and four in the top of the seventh from two singles, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly. At the end of the game, the Flying Dutchman won game one of the doubleheader, 13-4.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) started the game for FDU and pitched an inning while striking out one.
Liam Stemmler (Bayport, NY),
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ), and
Evan Sabo (Hillsborough, NJ) pitched the middle innings for FDU.
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) appeared for the last two outs and tied the program record for appearances in his career with 59 with this appearance.
Game Two
Game two kicked off with a run in the top of the first from a double, giving Lebanon Valley the 1-0 lead. This time, though, FDU fought back and put down two runs to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Cowles kicked off the inning with a single down the middle and was moved to third from a double by Rolli. Longo knocked both of them in with a single through the right side, and the Devils stole the lead, and were now ahead by 2-1.
The Flying Dutchman took it right back in the top of the third, scoring three runs from a single, sacrifice fly, and throwing error, and led 4-2.
The bottom of the fourth is where FDU said enough is enough and broke through with seven runs. The inning started out with déjà vu, as Cowles hit a single down the middle, and made it to third from a double by Rolli to right center. This time though,
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) joined in on the fun, smashing a triple that scored both Cowles and Rolli and tied the game up at four.
Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) was hit by a pitch, and then Muratore placed down a beautifully placed bunt and beat out the throw for a single to score Colbert. Then came the nail in the coffin, as Ganca crushed a home run over the right field wall to clear the bases and score three runs, and right after,
Aaron Santos hit a deep fly ball that went all the way to the center field wall, and became an inside the park home run, to make the lead 9-4.
Lebanon Valley attempted to chip away at the lead, scoring one in the top of the sixth, and one in the top of the seventh, both from ground rule doubles, but it wasn't enough. The Devils shut them down and picked up game two of the doubleheader by a score of 9-6.
Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NY) started game two for FDU and earned the win, going for five innings and striking out two batters.
Trenon Stanard (Millington, NJ) came in for the middle innings and pitched great, throwing for an inning while only allowing a run and striking out a batter.
Jake Stollar (Flemington, NJ) only allowed one run and threw two strikeouts for his nine-out save.
FDU will welcome Stockton for their final non-conference matchup at home on April 22
nd. First pitch will be at 3:30 PM.
