Annville, PA (April 17 ) – The FDU-Florham Devils Softball Team (18-14, 4-6 MAC Freedom) took a business trip to Lebanon Valley for MAC Freedom doubleheader action and came close with the Flying Dutchman in both games as the forced eight innings in game one but lost by a 5-6 score, and was just shy of extra innings in game two as a 3-2 loss was recorded for the Devils.
Game 1:
FDU-Florham felt the fire as soon as they stepped up to the plate, as the Devils saw
Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) bring in the first two runs with a double to right field. Lebanon Valley did not want the game out of reach within the first inning, therefore, the Dutchman also doubled to the outfield to bring two runs in and tie the score.
The second inning resulted in the Flying Dutchman taking their first lead of the game with an RBI single to left field, 3-2.
The Devils waited and remained quiet until the fifth inning when junior
Mollie Reece (Woodlyn, PA) tied the game with a single through the right side to bring the pinch runner on third home, 3-3.
The offensive momentum carried for FDU through the next few at-bats when
Grace Capparelli (South Plainfield, NJ) helped reclaim the lead by sending the ball to right center field, 4-3.
FDU-Florham continued into the sixth inning as
Hailey Wodecki (Southampton, Mass.) added the fifth run to allow a two-run lead heading into the final inning. The Flying Dutchman found the spurt it needed to tie the game and force extra innings with a triple down the right field line. They eventually took advantage of the bottom of the eighth inning and took game one by 6-5 score.
Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ) (12-6) was in the circle for 7.1 innings and recorded 14 strikeouts, which helped her eclipse the career mark of 500 strikeouts.
Game 2:
Lebanon Valley was the first to make the scoreboard light up, as they added their first run in the third inning after a bases-loaded walk. A homer in the fourth inning made a 2-2 score going into the top of the fifth inning.
FDU-Florham first started with their scoring effort with a double to left field from Reece. Capparelli saw the gap in left center field and was able to record the RBI for the Devils' first run.
Later in the inning,
Riley Signor (Media, PA) repaid Capparelli for her efforts by sending her home with a RBI single to left field to also make it a tied game.
Just as FDU thought they would force extra innings against the Flying Dutchman again, Lebanon Valley was able to avoid the last out of the game with an RBI single to center field to bring in the winning run from second base, 3-2.
Sinatra (12-7) remained in the circle for game two and threw out an effort of six strikeouts in the hope her defense would take down the Flying Dutchman.
FDU-Florham looks to Tuesday, April 22 for its last home contest of the season, as they are set to host Misericordia for a MAC Freedom doubleheader, starting at 3pm and 5pm.
