Madison, NJ (April 15) – The Devils set up to play against Maritime at home, while celebrating autism awareness day. Unfortunately, they were thwarted from a win, as they fell by a score of 12-6.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) had the best game at the plate for the Devils, as he went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) also went 2-5 with a run scored.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) went 1-3 with two runs scored.
Maritime pounced early in the top of the first, scoring three runs on two doubles. FDU fought back though, putting one run up in the bottom half of the inning. Giovenco kicked it off with a gorgeous bunt down the line for a single.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) hit a single to advance Giovenco to third, and then Giovenco scored on a double steal with Santos to make the score 3-1.
The Privateers put up another run in the top of the second off a double, but FDU responded once again with a run of their own. Colbert got the inning started, hitting a single to and eventually scored from an error that allowed Giovenco to reach base, and to keep the game close at 4-2 in favor of the Privateers.
Sadly, Maritime pulled away, as they scored the next eight runs of the game, with one in the fourth from a single, three in the fifth from a sacrifice fly, error, and single, and four in the sixth from a steal at home, two singles, and a hit by pitch. After six innings, the score was 12-2 in favor of the Privateers.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth. Santos led off the inning with a single, and after
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) walked and Colbert singled to load the bases, a wild pitch scored Santos to cut the lead to 9 runs.
FDU struck more in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) started with a walk, and after Giovenco was hit by a pitch and
Anthony Di Chiara (Massapequa, NY) was walked to load the bases, Santos singled to score Muratore. Longo walked to bring Giovenco in, and
Jacob Forgatch (Parsippany, NJ) walked to score Di Chiara, making the lead shrink down to 12-6. Unfortunately, that would be the final score, as the Devils could not complete the comeback.
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ) started the game and went for two innings and threw three strikeouts.
Drew Seawell (Prince Frederick, Md.),
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ)¸
Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ),
Evan Sabo (Hillsborough, NJ) and
Trevor Kobryn (Hillsborough, NJ) all pitched out of the bullpen for the Devils.
The Devils will travel to Annville, Pa. to play game one against Lebanon Valley in a do-or-die series. First pitch will be at 3:30 PM.
