Madison, NJ (April 13) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (13-18) (5-10 MAC Freedom) went to Misericordia for their doubleheader hoping to continue off of their momentum that they grabbed when they beat the defending national champions on Friday. Unfortunately, they dropped both games of the doubleheader, by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) had the best day for the Devils, going 4-8 with a run scored.
Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) went 3-7 on the day, with two RBIs.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) went 3-7 with two runs scored.
Game One
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second, where Misericordia plated a run from a sacrifice bunt.
FDU answered right back though, plating a run in the top of the third.
Zach Ganca (Merrick, NJ) singled to start the innings, and Cowles doubled to tie up the game at one a piece.
The Cougars clawed the lead back in the bottom half of the third, scoring three runs off of a double, wild pitch, and throwing error, and made the game a 4-1 scoreline in favor of Misericordia. They plated one more in the bottom of the fourth off a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
The Devils got back on the score board in the top of the sixth. Cowles singled through the right side, and
Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) got on from a throwing error that sent Cowles to third.
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) sent him home with a single, and FDU remained in the game, with the score being 5-2.
Misericordia plated one more from a double in the bottom of the sixth, making it 6-2, and so the comeback attempt from FDU began in the top of the seventh. Giovenco was hit by a pitch, and singles from Ganca and Santos loaded the bases. Cowles hit a sacrifice fly that scored Giovenco, and all of s sudden, the game was looking reachable. Sadly, Misericordia shut down the rest of the Devils, and that was the final score, with the Cougars picking up game one by a score of 6-3.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) went all six innings in game one, and performed admirably, allowing only three earned runs and striking out three batters.
Game Two
The Devils started off game two swinging, as they put two runs in during the top of the first. Ganca doubled to kick it off, and after a Santos single advanced him to third,
John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) singled up the middle to score Ganca.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) then singled to right center to score Santos, which led to a 2-0 for the Devils.
Misericordia tied the game at two, first off a single in the bottom of the first, and then off a throwing error in the second. They later scored two runs in the bottom of the third off a triple and double to lead 4-2.
The Devils wouldn't back down though, and tied the game up in the top of the fourth. Diaz first reached base off a fielding error, and Geist joined him after getting hit by a pitch. Two straight wild pitches scored Diaz, and a sacrifice fly from
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) scored Geist to tie the game at 4-4.
After some quiet, FDU took the lead back in the top of the seventh, as they plated one run. Giovenco singled down the line to lead off the inning, and after Ganca advanced him to second from a sacrifice fly, and Giovenco went to third from a wild pitch, Santos walked and Cowles hit a single to drive in Giovenco to take the lead, 5-4.
Regrettably, Misericordia took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh off a single and fielding error, as they once again lead 6-5. They gained one more run from a single in the eighth, and the Devils couldn't respond, losing the second game of the doubleheader as well by a score of 7-5.
Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NY) started game two for FDU, and went 2.2 innings while striking out one batter.
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) pitched the next 1.1 innings, and pitched it well, not allowing a run.
Liam Stemmler (Bayport, NY) pitched three innings out of the bullpen, and struck out five batters.
Jack Kopera (Jefferson Twp., NJ) pitched the final inning for the Devils in game two.
FDU will return home to take on Maritime on April 15
th in non-conference action as they take in part in Autism Awareness Day. First pitch will be at 3:30 PM.
