Baseball Downs (RV) Misericordia, 15-5

Madison, NJ (April 11) – The Devils welcomed the defending national champions, and still receiving votes,  in Misericordia to Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark and downed them, 15-5.

Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) had a career day as a Devil, going 2-4 with 5 RBIs, including a grand slam. Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) kept his hot season going, hitting 1-4 with four RBIs. Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) picked up right where he left off, going 1-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The early game was dominated by the Devils, as they scored ten runs in the first three innings. Misericordia put one run up in the top of the first, but FDU hammered off of Misericordia's starter, as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Giovenco got on with a walk, and Zach Ganca (Merrick, NJ) knocked a single. Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) walked to load the bases, and John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to score Giovenco and tie the game. Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again, and this time, Misericordia were made to regret it, as Geist crushed a grand slam over the left field wall to make a 5-1 lead.

FDU put five more up in the bottom of the third inning. Rolli was hit by a pitch, and Diaz walked. Geist punched a single into left field to score Rolli, and Colbert hit a single up the middle to score Diaz. Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) walked, and once again with the bases loaded, Giovenco struck, hitting a bases clearing RBI double to make the score a commanding 10-1 lead for the Devils.

The Cougars attempted to crawl back into the game, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth off of two fielders choices and a double, but that's the last of the runs put up by Misericordia, as the rest were put up by the Devils.

The game remained the same score until the bottom of the seventh, where FDU put up two more runs. Giovenco was hit by a pitch, and Ganca singled to put two runners on base. A deep Aaron Santos (Bridgwater, NJ) fly advanced both runners, and Cowles hit a single that scored both, making it a 12-5 lead.

The Devils expanded that lead to 10 in the bottom of the eighth. Diaz, Geist, and Colbert all walked, and Geist scored from a wild pitch. Giovenco grounded out to score Colbert, and Ganca scored Muratore, who reached base from a fielders choice, on an error, which created a 15-5 lead, a lead that would stay until the end, as the Devils took down the defending champions, 15-5.

Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) started the game for the Devils, and held down the fort, going for four innings and striking out a batter. Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ) picked the win for FDU, as he went three innings while striking out four batters. Jake Stollar (Flemington, NJ) pitched the remaining two innings for the Devils, while striking out two batters.

FDU-Florham will travel to Dallas, Pa. for a doubleheader to aim to win the series against Misericordia on April 13th. First pitch time will be determined at a later date.
