Myrtle Beach, SC (March 9) – On the first day of the spring break Fastpitch Dream Classic, the FDU-Florham Softball team completed its day going 2-0 as they held on for the win against the United States Coast Guard Academy 5-4, and secured the 6-5 win over Penn College in extra innings with a walk-off RBI.
Game 1:
Things got off to a strong start as
Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) doubled into left field to mark the first RBI of the day.
The second inning saw much success for the Devils as
Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) brought in three runs to make a 4-0 game.
FDU-Florham's scoring efforts slowed in the fourth inning of play but was able to add another run for good measure. The United States Coast Guard saw their chance to avoid a shutout with a single to center field, 5-1. They quickly added another two to start the fifth inning and added another RBI to come within one run.
The Devils held strong for the final two innings as they saw a 5-4 win over the United States Coast Guard, for their first game of spring break.
In the circle for FDU-Florham was
Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ) (2-1) who secured the win with seven strikeouts. The Devils also saw
Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) throw the ball over the plate for 4 innings and one strikeout.
Game 2:
FDU-Florham was not the first to add to the scoreboard as Penn added their first run in the second inning with a single to left field. They then added another two runs in the third innings to go up 3-0 heading into the fourth.
The Wildcats then made it a 5-0 score with a triple down the right-field line in hope the score would suppress the Devils' fire. It did just the opposite as
Victoria Fantozzi (Hillsborough, NJ) started the late rally with a single to right field for a 2-run RBI.
A seventh-inning effort starting with Lambright and ending with Rodriguez, resulted in a 5-5 tied score. It was then after a half-inning of defense, the Devils managed to place a runner on third to score the winning run. Sophomore
Kylee Berg (Bordentown, NJ) walked up to the plate and was able to bring the runner on third base home to account for the winning run as she sent the ball up the middle to secure the 6-5 score in eight innings.
Appearing in the circle for 4.1 innings was
Caydence Barton (Sayreville, NJ) as her first collegiate showing resulted in a win with 2 recorded strikeouts on 15 batters faced.
FDU-Florham awaits 9 am and 11 am games on Monday, March 10 against Mitchell and SUNY Morrisville for their second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic, in Myrtle Beach.
