Madison, NJ (March 28) – The Devils (8-13) (2-5 MAC Freedom) started the first of a three-game series at home against Stevens. Although they battled closely, they ultimately fell in extra innings by a score of 6-4.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) crushed a home run and earned two RBIs.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) went 1-4 with a triple and one RBI.
Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY) knocked in an RBI single.
The game was scoreless all the way until the bottom of the sixth, as both pitchers were in a duel. It was the Stevens pitcher who blinked first, as FDU connected to score three runs.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Aaron Santos then crushed a ball over the left field fence for his first home run of the season and made the game 2-0 in favor of the Devils. Diaz continued the momentum by hitting a triple on the very next pitch, and Johnston brought him home with a single up the middle to create a 3-0 advantage for the Devils.
Unfortunately, the Ducks offense got going, as in the top of the seventh, they got one run back due to a single, and in the eighth inning, they knocked in two runs off a single to tie the game. The Devils held them in the ninth inning, but could not score, so the game went to extras.
Stevens took over the game in the top of the tenth, as they scored two runs off of two singles, and one run from a sacrifice fly to make the game 6-3 in the Ducks favor.
FDU attempted to put up a comeback in the bottom of the tenth.
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) got on base with a bunt single, and
John Rolli got hit by a pitch to reach as well. Santos walked, and then Diaz walked to bring in Muratore to create a 6-4 lead. Sadly, the next batter hit into a double play to end the game, and Stevens won a close fought battle in extras, 6-4.
Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) started for FDU, and was dynamic, throwing six innings of no-run baseball, while striking out six batters.
Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ),
Jack Kopera (Jefferson Twp. NJ),
Trenon Stanard (Millington, NJ) and
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) came out of the bullpen for the Devils.
FDU-Florham will close their series with Stevens with a doubleheader in Hoboken on March 29
th. First pitch will be at 4:30 PM.
