Madison, NJ (March 27) – With the Battle of Madison Ave. still being whispered between the three campuses, the FDU-Florham Softball team hosts Saint Elizabeth for a non-conference doubleheader. Both games did not disappoint in the rivalry series as the Devils first won in 8 innings by a 3-2 score, and then ended things quickly with a 5-inning mercy rule and 10-0 score over the Eagles.
Game 1:
The doubleheader started out quietly for the first four innings, as it consisted of Saint Elizabeth sending the ball right to the glove of the Devil fielder.
FDU-Florham was able to put up hits but did not see any runs until the fifth inning when
Hailey Wodecki (Southampton, Mass.) sacrificed a fly ball to bring in the RBI.
To avoid the loss, Saint Elizabeth found a spot in right field to lay the ball down for the runner on second base to score the run, tying the game and causing extra innings to determine a winner, 1-1.
With a runner on second due to international tiebreaker rules, the Eagles quickly scored within two batters and took the field ready to defend. The Devils also did the same but were able to fill the bases to tie and win on the
Grace Capparelli (South Plainfield, NJ) single up the middle, 3-2.
Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ) (7-3) has now pitched her second game in a row, totaling over 10 strikeouts as she hit the double digit while facing 28 batters and throwing the ball to the catch 119 times.
Game 2:
FDU-Florham kept game two short as
Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) recorded the first two of three runs in the first inning by a single through the left side.
Caitlin Jordan (Swarthmore, PA) started the second inning with a capitalization on the Eagles' fielding error. After another two runs were added, 6-0, Wodecki highlighted the game with her first collegiate home run over the left field fence.
The two runs in the third innings were RBI's added by
Alison Wysocki (Clark, NJ) and
Sydney Grifone (Veron, NJ), with the tenth run of the game in the fifth inning being put on by Capparelli, 10-0.
Only allowing three hits was
Caydence Barton (Sayreville, NJ) (3-1) as she lessened the Eagles' offensive showing with 3 strikeouts on 72 total pitches.
FDU-Florham next looks to host Stevens for MAC Freedom action on Saturday, March 29, with the first pitches occurring at 1pm and 3pm.
