Aston, PA (March 19) – In a non-conference doubleheader, the FDU-Florham Softball team traveled to Neumann for a crack at sending the ball over the Knights' heads. The Devils did just so in game one by a 7-0 score but fell flat in game two as Neumann recorded their first win by a 7-2 score.
Game 1:
FDU-Florham quickly made themselves comfortable enough to bring in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, when
Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) sacrificed her hit to left field to bring in the first run, RBI.
With the momentum still flowing
Mollie Reece (Woodlyn, PA) found a line up the middle for the ball to follow, so the second run of the game for the Devils could be brought home. FDU-Florham's third run was also scored within the same three outs.
Rodriguez found herself another RBI in the third inning, 4-0, and the Devils tacked on an additional three runs in the sixth inning to almost reach a mercy rule early. They did not and played the full seven innings, ending with a 7-0 win for FDU.
Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ)(5-2) was seen in the circle for the entire game collected 5 strikeouts while facing 28 batters. She only let up five hits, while both of Neumann's pitcher gave up a combined ten hits and seven runs.
Game 2:
Neumann felt the home-field pressure and put up one run in the first inning to avoid a second shutout.
FDU-Florham didn't agree with the score so decided to add a 2-run RBI single from
Grace Capparelli (South Plainfield, NJ) to retake the lead for the second time in the series.
The Knights' bats began to warm even more into the third inning as they reclaimed the lead with a 4-2 score. FDU-Florham's bats were cooled off only recording two hits after the fourth inning.
Neumann added three more runs in the sixth inning and sealed their first win of the season with a 7-2 score over the Devils.
Seen in the circle for game two for the Devils was
Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) (2-2) who pitched 46 pitches in two innings, with two strikeouts.
Giana Abinanti (Freehold, NJ) threw out four strikeouts in four innings on 79 pitches.
FDU-Florham will look to Saturday, March 22 for its next contest against Arcadia, which also marks the opening of MAC Freedom play for the Devils. The first pitch in game one of the doubleheader will be thrown out at 1pm.
