Madison, N.J. (March 16) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (7-8) (2-1 MAC Freedom) faced off against King's (Pa.) (3-9) (1-2 MAC Freedom) in a winner take all match for the series. In the end, FDU outdueled the Monarchs, winning 11-4.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) did great at the plate, going 2-4 with three RBIs.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) also did well, going 2-5 with two RBIs.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) got the most hits for FDU, going 3-6.
The game started scoreless until the bottom of the third, where FDU struck for two runs. Diaz lead off the inning with a triple, and Santos followed it up with a triple of his own to score Diaz.
John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) scored Santos from a fielder's choice.
King's fought back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs, but the Devils would not back down.
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) lead off the inning with a single, and off a Diaz single and a fielding error from the right fielder. Diaz later scored from a balk.
In the fifth inning, FDU put up one more run.
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ),
Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ), and
Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) all walked to load the bases, and Muratore hit a sacrifice fly to score Colbert and make the game 5-2.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, where the Devils shut the door on King's. Geist, Muratore, and Diaz singled to load the bases, before Santos doubled to bring in both Geist and Muratore. Giovenco then doubled to score Diaz and Santos. Rolli singled, and
Zach Ganca (Merrick, NJ) grounded out to score Giovenco. Rolli later scored on a wild pitch, and at the end of the seventh, FDU held a commanding 11-2 lead.
King's put up two runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough, and FDU went on to win the game 11-4, and the series 2-1.
Trevor Kobryn (Hillsborough, NJ) started the game for the Devils, and performed admirably, going 3.2 innings while only giving up two runs and striking out two.
Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ) earned the win for FDU, going for 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball while also striking out two.
Drew Seawell (Prince Frederick, Md.) pitched for 1.2 innings while only allowing two runs and striking out one.
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) came in for the last out, and locked up the game for the Devils.
FDU-Florham will travel to Kings Point, NY to battle Merchant Marine on March 18th under the lights. First pitch will be 5:30 PM.
