Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (March 15) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (6-8) (1-1 MAC Freedom) kicked off their matchups in conference with a double header at King's (Pa.) (3-8) (1-1 MAC Freedom). Ultimately, they would split the doubleheader, dropping game one 5-3 while picking up game two 9-6.
Zach Ganca (Merrick, NJ) had a great day, going 3-5 with 3 RBIs.
John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) went 5-10 and one RBI for the day, although he went an astounding 5-6 in game two.
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) continued his hot start to the season, going 2-5 with three RBIs scored.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, King's got on the board first in the bottom of the second from an RBI single. They found two more runs in the third inning from a ground out and a single.
The Devils found their first run of the matchup in the top of the fourth inning. After
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) was hit by a pitch, and
Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY) was walked, Diaz continued his hot start to the season by punching an RBI single to score Colbert to push the game to 3-1.
The Monarchs found an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to place two more runs.
Down to their last three outs in the top of the seventh, FDU attempted to put up a comeback, as they put two runs in. The inning started with
Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) hitting a single and was moved to third off of a
Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) double.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) knocked Geist in with a sacrifice fly, and
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) drove in Muratore from an RBI single. However, that's all they could put up, and King's won game one of the doubleheader by a score of 5-3.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) started the game for the Devils and went 3.1 innings while striking out one batter.
Jake Stollar (Flemington, NJ) was the only other Devil to pitch, and he did well, pitching the remaining 2.2 innings and not allowing a run, while striking out two.
Game Two
FDU started off game two with a run in the top of the first inning. After Giovenco reached base off a hit by pitch, and Rolli singled to advance Giovenco to third, Ganca slapped in an RBI single to give the Devils the lead 1-0.
The Devils put another run up in the top of the third. Rolli connected on a double was brought in on a single from Ganca to make the score 2-0.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth, where FDU extended their lead. Rolli and Ganca struck again, as the former singled and was advanced to third by a double from the latter. Rolli scored on a balk, and FDU led the game 3-0.
The Devils continued to score runs in the top of the sixth.
Matthew Bond (Ridgewood, NJ) started off the inning with a double, and after Geist put up a sacrifice bunt to advance him to third, Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to score Bond. Santos then hit a triple, and was scored by Giovenco, punching a single through the left side to make the score 5-0.
King's finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth and put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 5-4. They took the lead in the bottom of the seventh off a double, leading 6-5.
FDU took the lead back in the top of the eighth. Diaz and Santos walked to start the inning, and Giovenco advanced both of them on a sacrifice bunt. Rolli singled to score Diaz, and Ganca grounded out to score Santos to take the 7-6 advantage.
They furthered their lead in the top of the ninth.
Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) started off the inning with a walk.
Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, NJ) came in to pinch run, and was advanced to second off a Geist single. Both stole bases to advance, and Sica was punched in by a sacrifice fly by Diaz. Geist then scored on a wild pitch. No one else world score, and FDU picked up game two by a score of 9-6.
Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) started game two and threw four scoreless innings while striking out four.
Trenon Stanard (Millington, NJ) pitching 1.2 innings in the middle of the game.
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ) picked up the win for the Devils.
Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NY) and
Jack Kopera (Jefferson Twp., NJ) threw the last two innings, with Kopera picking up the save.
FDU will hope to pick up the rubber match of the series on March 16
th at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. First pitch will be at 11:00 AM.
