Myrtle Beach, SC. (March 12) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (5-7) wrapped up their trip in Myrtle Beach with a game against WPI. Unfortunately, they fell just short, by a score of 7-6.
John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) was the best hitter of the day for FDU, getting three hits and one RBI.
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) also had a good day, going 1-4 with two RBIs.
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) scored his run in the top of the fourth all by himself.
The Engineers took the lead in the bottom of the first off a three run home run.
The score remained that way until the top of the fourth, where FDU played small ball to score a run. Giovenco reached base on a single, then stole second and third bases before scoring on a throwing error from the catcher on that same play.
WPI answered back in the bottom half of the inning, as they scored on a single up the middle to make the game 4-1.
The offense woke up in the top of the sixth inning, as the Devils put up five runs.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) started the inning off with a double, then scored on back to back wild pitches from the pitcher. After Giovenco walked and Rolli singles,
Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) connected on a single to score Giovenco, and after
Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY) loaded the bases with a single,
Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) tied the game on an RBI groundout that scored Rolli. Longo then gave FDU the lead off a 2-run double that scored both Colbert and Johnston to make the game 6-4 in FDU's favor.
It was the same score until the bottom of the eighth, where WPI tied the game off of a sacrifice fly and a ground out. They walked off on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, and WPI took the win by a score of 7-6.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) started the game for FDU, and went two innings, giving up three earned runs but striking out four batters.
Drew Seawell (Prince Frederick, Md.),
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ) and
