Softball's Season Opener Splits into Two at William Paterson

Wayne, NJ (March 1) – In its season-opening debut, the FDU-Florham Softball (1-1) team took to William Paterson(1-1) for a Saturday afternoon non-conference doubleheader and saw an offensive attack in the first game as the Devils won 14-0 in five innings, but fell to the Pioneers in the last inning of the second game, 5-4.

Game 1:

FDU-Florham got right to work as they scored three in the first inning. Junior Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) got things started with a double to left field to bring in Kylee Berg (Bordentown, NJ) for the first RBI of the game.

Berg added a run in the second inning with an RBI and a sequence involving Riley Signor (Media, PA) and Alison Wysocki (Clark, NJ) contributed two runs in the second inning.

By the fifth inning, the heat was turned all the way up in an offensive view, as eight runs ensured a mercy rule and a 14-0 win over William Paterson in game one.

Starting the season and making her debut for the Devils was Graduate Student Erin Sinatra (Colonia, NJ) (1-0) , who struck out 8 of 22 batters faced while only giving up 5 hits.

Game 2:

The second game of the day started with all horns up and out as Signor sent the ball into right field to bring in her teammate of an RBI triple.

The second inning remained quiet for both teams until Giulia Olear (Cranford, NJ) started to make a bit of noise with an RBI single up the middle of the field.

William Paterson got to the fifth inning and started to feel its home-opening pressure to collect a run, which resulted in two runs being scored of a single through the left side, 3-2. The Pioneers tied and even took the lead in the sixth inning by one run, 4-3.

The first home run of the year for the Devils belongs to Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) who was able to tie the game at 4-4 in a final effort the secure the two-game sweep over the Pioneers. Even though her hit made it past the fence, the Devils as a team fell just short in the bottom of the seventh inning as William Paterson singled up the middle to bring in the winning RBI, 5-4.

The Devils saw two in the circle during the second set of seven innings. Junior Sydney Grifone (Vernon, NJ) also made her debut for the Devils by pitching four innings and recording two strikeouts on 18 batters. Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) (0-1) was given the loss but not before seeing 16 batters in 2.1 innings.

FDU-Florham looks to Tuesday, March 4th for its next non-conference contest at Kean. The first pitches are set to be thrown at 3pm and 5pm.
