Baseball Sweeps CCNY In Doubleheader, 10-2 & 25-2

Madison, N.J. (March 1) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (3-3) swept the double-header vs. CCNY, winning the first game 10-2 and the second game 25-2.

Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) was the best hitter combined from the two games, going 6-8 and knocking in three RBI's. Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) went 5-8 with four RBI's between the two games. Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) went 3-5 for two RBI's for the day.

Game One
The first runs of the game came in the second inning, as after John Rolli (Long Valley, NJ) reached on an error and Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) and Geist hit singles, Muratore hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Rolli, and Giovenco singled to bring in both Diaz and Geist. After two innings, the Devils led 3-0.

The third inning saw no one score from either side, but in the top of the fourth, CCNY climbed back into the game, scoring two runs. FDU swung right back though, picking up three more runs. Geist and Giovenco singled to start the inning, and after a double steal, Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) singled and advanced to second to bring in both of them. After a wild pitch, Santos brought home Colbert to bring the score to 6-2.

FDU added three more in the bottom of the fifth. After Giovenco got hit by a pitch, Colbert walked, and Santos singled, Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) singled down the line to bring in Giovenco, and an error on the throw brought home Colbert as well. After five, the score was 9-2 in favor of the Devils.

FDU put up one last run in the bottom of the sixth, as after Diaz singled and Geist hit a ground rule double, Muratore singled down the left field line to bring home Diaz. CCNY didn't score in the top of the 7th, and FDU won the first game of the double-header by a score of 10-2.

Chris Kaponis (Burlingtown Twp., NJ) got his second win of the season, throwing for five innings of work, while only allowing two hits and striking out eight. Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) pitched the last two innings, and didn't allow a single run, while striking out one.

Game Two
The Devils put the game away in the first inning, as they scored nine. Giovenco scored the first run on a wild pitch, and the next three all came off one swing, as Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) crushed a ball over the right field fence for a home run to give FDU a 4-0 lead. They kept it going with singles from Geist, Giovenco, and Colbert, with the first two scoring one each and Colbert's plating two. Finally, Santos brought home Colbert on a triple to give FDU a 9-0 lead.

CCNY found a run via a groundout in the top of the second, but FDU pounced for five more runs in the second. Christopher Leon (Union, NJ) tripled to bring home Diaz for the first run, and scored himself on a wild pitch. Geist and Muratore both reached base, and performed a beautiful double steal that saw Muratore steal second and Geist score on a stolen base home. Giovenco singled to advance Muratore to third, and Santos scored Muratore via a groundout. Rolli scored Giovenco from a single, and after two, the Devils held a commanding 14-1 lead.

The third inning only scored one more run for FDU, as after Leon and Muratore singled, Giovenco singled to score Leon to lead by 15-1.

The game quieted down for a few innings, as CCNY scored a run in the top of the fourth, and there were no more runs scored until the bottom of the seventh.

That's when the floodgates opened again, as FDU scored five more runs. Geist singled to score Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY), and Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, NJ) hit a fielder's choice which scored Jacob Forgatch (Parsippany, NJ). After Zach Ganca (Merrick, NJ) reached base on a hit by pitch, Dominic Falino (Miller Place, NJ) grounded out to score Sica. Matthew Bond (Ridgewood, NJ) and Cody Batsides (Long Valley, NJ) both hit singles that scored one run, and after seven innings, FDU scored a whopping 20 runs, and lead the game by 18.

FDU scored their final five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Geist doubled to score Forgatch, and after Sica got hit by a pitch, and Ganca singled to load the bases, Falino tripled to score all three runners on base. Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) connected on the final run of the game, scoring Falino on a single. CCNY did not put up a run in the 9th, and FDU completed the sweep in destructive fashion, winning game two 25-2.

Trevor Kobryn (Hillsborough, NJ) got his first win in a Devil's uniform, going four innings while only allowing two runs, and striking out four batters. The Devils saw meaningful relief outings from Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NY), Christian Weippert (Long Valley, NJ), Trenon Stanard (Millington, NJ), and Jake Stollar (Flemington, NJ), all of which did not allow a run.

FDU will hope to rally off the momentum on Tuesday, March 4th, as they will complete their homestand before going to Myrtle Beach against Rutgers-Newark. First pitch will be at 2:30 PM.
