Baseball Vanquishes Rutgers-Newark, 5-3

Madison, N.J. (March 4) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (4-3) closed out their homestand against Rutgers-Newark, and vanquished them 5-3.

Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) made his one at bat count, hitting a two run single. Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, NJ) scored the only other run of the game on a wild pitch.

The first run of the game came from the Devils in the bottom of the first. Xavier Diaz (Wanaque, NJ) kicked it off with a four pitch walk, who advanced to second off an Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, NJ) single. Colbert brought Diaz home with an RBI single, and after one, FDU lead 1-0.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third, where Rutgers Newark plated a run to tie the game off of a sacrifice fly. They took the lead in the fourth, scoring a run off a sacrifice bunt, but the Devils escaped further damage off of Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) as he threw two runners out to exit the inning.

FDU punched back in the bottom of the fifth, as after Longo singled, and Geist singled to send him to third, a wild pitch scored Longo and tied the game up again at two.

The Scarlet Raiders reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth off a double, but FDU answered back and more in the bottom half of the inning.

Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) kicked off the bottom half with a walk, which he advanced to second off a Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) single. Diaz sac bunted to advance both runners, and Santos walked, loading the bases. Colbert put his body on the line and was hit by a pitch, which allowed Muratore to score and tie the game up at three. Cowles pinch hit for Longo, and the decision paid off, as with the bases still loaded, he punched a two run single into right field, and FDU took the lead back, 5-3. The score remained that way until the end, and the Devils vanquished the Scarlet Knights, 5-3.

Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, NJ) started the game for FDU, and although he earned a no decision, he pitched well through two innings of work, allowing no runs. Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island) and Drew Seawell (Prince Frederick, Md.) pitched the middle innings of the game, with Gaetano allowing two runs in two innings of work, and Seawell allowing one run in 1.1 innings. Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) picked up the win for the game, as he pitched for 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Trenon Stanard (Millington, NJ) picked up his first save, as he came in for the final six outs while striking out three to close the game.

FDU-Florham will head down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during spring break to participate in the Ripken Experience. Their first match will be a double-header against Pitt-Bradford on March 8th. First pitch of game one will be at 10:00 AM.
