Madison, N.J. (February 22 & 23) – The FDU-Florham Men's Tennis Team started its spring season with the shortest traveling distance as four players participated in the Ranger Invitational Doubles Tournament, a two day event hosted by Drew.
The first pair to compete was
Matthew Emery (Howell, NJ) and
Ronald Duval (Old Bridge, NJ) who faced three pairs of RIT players and lost in all three matches by scores of 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. The two Devils did see success in their fourth match as they won against a duo from Wilkes by a score of 6-1.
The second pair of Devils to be seen competing in the tournament was
Nick Weglinski (Wayne, NJ) and
Kelvin Liwag (Marlboro, NJ) who captured two wins against the host, Drew, with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. The junior and first year did learn from failure as they were served two losses from Rowan College of South New Jersey (6-2, 6-2) and one from Wilkes as well (6-2).
Both FDU teams found themselves in the round the 16 on day 2 of the tournament. Emery and Duval faced Gelijins and Moybayed from Drew and won in extra points by a score of 7-5. Liwag and Weglinski also faced a Drew team formed by Aracari and Faro, but took a 7-5 loss instead.
Now seeded in the quarterfinals, Emery and Duval took to the court for a chance to start the season with personal wins. However, that hope was cut short as the team lost to Turcotte and Weber of RIT, by a score of 6-2.
FDU-Florham will take about a month to improve its skills before hosting Yeshiva on March 20 at 3:30pm, for a non-conference matchup.
