Baseball Seals Victory against Drew, 6-1

Madison, N.J. (February 22) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (1-0) hosted Drew (0-2) for the first part of the Madison Avenue Challenge, and sealed victory, winning by a score of 6-1.

Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) started off the season hot, going three-for-four while scoring three runs. Ryan Johnston (Garden City, N.Y) had an excellent debut as well, as he went two-for-five with an RBI and a stolen base. Parker Muratore (Branchburg, NJ) made it on base in three out of his four at-bats.

Drew put the first run on the board, off a Devils error in the top of the first. No more runs were scored until the bottom of the third, when FDU pounced to take the lead. Muratore and Giovenco set up the inning with a walk and a single. Nicholas Colbert (Belmar, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Muratore home, and an error from the Drew centerfielder allowed Giovenco to go to third base. A wild pitch brought him home, and after three innings, FDU led by a score of 2-1.

After a scoreless fourth inning, FDU put three runs up in the 5th to extend their lead to 5-1. Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) kicked off the inning getting on first base. Muratore and Giovenco both bunted for hits to load the bases, and Colbert hit his second sacrifice fly of the night, bringing home Geist. Johnston connected on a single to bring in Muratore, and Daniel Cowles (Colts Neck, NJ) hit a single to bring in Giovenco. The Devils held a commanding 5-1 lead after five innings.

FDU found one more run in the contest in the sixth inning, as Giovenco hit a ground rule double, and was brought in by an error and wild pitch by the Rangers. FDU held that score throughout the rest of the game, and came away with a 6-1 victory.

Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., NJ) earned his first win of the season from a great outing, going five innings with six strikeouts, and giving up no earned runs. Tyler Gaetano (Staten Island, NJ) threw two innings, and gave up no runs while striking out one. Eddie Appollina (Annandale, NJ) saw the last two innings of work for the Devils on the mound, and gave up no runs while striking out one.

FDU-Florham is back at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Namoli to take on Saint Elizabeth in the second part of the Madison Avenue challenge on February 23rd. First pitch will be at 10:00 AM.
