Women's Basketball Lose Close Battle to King's, 79-73

Wilkes-Barre, PA (February 1) FDU-Florham Women's Basketball traveled to take on King's. Unfortunately, they lost a very lost battle by a score of 79-73.

FDU-Florham (6-13, 3-5 MAC Freedom) was led by Julia Vazquez (Bound Brook, NJ), scoring 21 points and earning three steals

King's (7-12, 3-5 MAC Freedom) best player on the court was Alli Lindsay, who scored 19 points.

The Devils started off the first quarter extremely hot, going on an 8-1 scoring. The first four points of that run were from Bianca Sode (Kenilworth, NJ), with Vazquez and Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) also scoring points. The Monarchs made it closer, scoring 5 straight points, before Vazquez responded with a jumper. A three-pointer from King's was responded to by Gabrielle Walker (Old Bridge, NJ), who hit a layup. Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) got onto the board with two free throws, and Kolby Lynch (Morristown, NJ) joined her on a fastbreak layup. Lynch also scored the next four points of the game before the Monarchs put the last shot up in the first quarter, which finished with FDU in front by a score of 20-13.

Sode started off the Devils with three points in the second quarter. The next few points were traded, with Centeno and Sode hitting shots before Destiny Knight (Philadelphia, PA) made two three-pointers in a row for the Devils to expand their lead to 11. A layup by King's was responded to by a jumper and a pair of free throws from Vazquez. The Monarchs closed out the first half on the right foot though, going on an 11-5 scoring run, with the points from FDU coming from a pair of free-throws from Tighe, and a three-point buzzer-beater from Centeno. At halftime, the Devils led by seven, with the score being 42-35.

The Devils started the second half strong, with FDU going on an 8-2 scoring run, with points from Vazquez, Sode, Lynch, and Centeno. The Monarchs pushed back though, scoring the next six points in a row before a layup by Tighe ended it. A jumper from King's was responded to by Vazquez on a layup. The Monarchs hit another three before Vazquez once again hit a jumper before Lynch followed it up with a layup. King's chipped the Devils lead though, outscoring the Devils 5-2 in the last few seconds, and with only ten minutes left of game time, FDU held a five-point lead, by a score of 60-55.

The last quarter was chaos, as each team grabbed the lead multiple times. King's started off hot, scoring the first nine points of the quarter to take the lead for the first time. FDU quickly responded with shots from Vazquez, Lynch, and Sode. After the Monarchs tied it, FDU went back on top with a layup from Vazquez. A three-pointer from King's to grab the lead was responded right back by a Walker jumper to go on top once again. King's took it back by scoring four straight points before Centeno hit a clutch three to give FDU a one-point lead. Unfortunately, King's scored the last seven points of the game, and as the clock hit zero, the Monarchs took a close-fought victory by a score of 79-73.

FDU-Florham shot 39.7% (29-73) from the floor, 28.6% (4-14) from three-point range, and 78.6% (11-14) from the free throw line, while King's shot 36.4% (28-77) from the floor, 29.4% (10-34) from three-point range and 72.2% (13-18) from the free throw line.
