MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team topped DeSales 3-1 at home Wednesday night as the Devils defeated the Bulldogs for the first time in 15 years in their final MAC Freedom match of the year.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Tayla O'Connor tallied a season-high 22 kills
- Gabbie Hart led the Devils with two aces and two blocks.
- Amaya Ocasio recorded 47 assists and 22 digs on the night
- Arianna Wood and Gevevieve Fitch joined Ocasio with 20-plus digs as the duo finished with 25 and 21, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first of four highly competitive sets, the Devils came out on top 26-24 Set 1.
- It was even the whole way through as the two squads went back and forth, point-for-point, but the Devils ended the set with three straight points on two kills from O'Connor and a Bulldogs attack error.
- Set 2 followed much of the same theme as Set 1 as it was back-and-forth for much of the set until the DeSales used a 6-0 run, including four straight kills, to come out on top 25-19.
- FDU took the next two sets as the Devils used a 5-1 run in the middle of Set 3 to take a 21-13 lead and cruised to a 25-18 victory to take a 2-1 match lead.
- Set 4 was again back-and-forth like Sets 1 and 2 as the Bulldogs matched the Devils point-for-point. After taking a 23-20 lead, DeSales knotted the set at 23 apiece, but consecutive kills from O'Connor and first year Laci Merz sealed the 3-1 match win for the Devils.
GAME NOTES
- Wednesday's match was Fitch's 16th tallying 10 or more kills and her fifth recording exactly 11 in a match.
- This was Ocasio's 13th straight match of 20 or more assists and just the second match having 20 or more assists and 20 or more digs.
- This was the first time FDU has beaten DeSales in 15 years with the last win coming on Oct. 13, 2010, when the Devils swept the Bulldogs.
