Women's Basketball Fall Against King's, 70-48

Madison, NJ  (January 8) FDU-Florham Women's Basketball played in their first in-conference match of the season against King's (Pa.) at home. Unfortunately, they failed to achieve the victory, losing by a score of 70-48.

FDU-Florham (3-9, 0-1 MAC Freedom) was led by Bianca Sode (Kenilworth, NJ), who scored 19 points. Sode also managed to secure five rebounds.
 
King's (5-7, 1-0 MAC Freedom) best player on the court was Lauren Casey, who scored 25 points and earned a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Monarchs and Devils went back and forward to start the game. After a layup by King's, Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) picked up the Devil's first points of the game on a three-pointer to give FDU the lead. After a pair of free throws restored the Monarch's lead, Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) snatched the lead right back for the Devils on a layup to make the score 5-4 in FDU's favor. The Monarchs then proceeded to go on a massive 14-2 run to close the quarter, with the lone points for the Devils coming from Sode. At the end of the first quarter, the score favored King's by a score of 18-7.

The second quarter started with traded points from both teams, as Kristen Mellon (Southampton, NJ) scoring her first points of the game. However, King's scored eight straight points to increase their lead to 18 points. FDU steeled their resolve, and chipped away at King's lead, closing the half while going on a 12-3 run, including a run of seven straight points. Julia Vazquez (Bound Brook, NJ) started the scoring run with a jump shot, which was followed by a three-pointer from Centeno. Tighe and Sode also contributed to the scoring run, and at halftime, FDU cut King's lead in half, with the score being 30-21.

The Monarchs started the third quarter hot, scoring seven straight points to start it out. The rest of the quarter saw traded points from both sides. Sode did most of her damage in this quarter, scoring 13 of the Devil's 20 points in the quarter. Centeno and Vazquez also contributed in the quarter, including a made three from Centeno. As the quarter came to an end, the lead for King's was 17 points, with the score being 58-41.

The fourth quarter was dominated by King's as after Sode hit a jumper, the Monarchs went on a run of 10 straight points, most of them coming from free throws. The Devils finished out the game with five points coming from Mellon, but at the end of the game, it was King's who were victorious, winning the game by a score of 70-48.

FDU-Florham shot 25.7% (18-70) from the floor, 41.7% (5-12) from three-point range, and 58.3% (7-12) from the free throw line, while King's shot 39.3% (24-61) from the floor, 47.1% (8-17) from three-point range and 56.0% (14-25) from the free throw line.

FDU earned more points off turnovers (14-5), while King's had more points from the bench (14-7), fast break points (13-4), points in the paint (28-12), and more points off second chances (11-4)

The Devils will continue their conference schedule with a road trip to Center Valley, Pennsylvania to take on the DeSales Bulldogs. Tip-off will be at 1:00 PM.
