Montclair, NJ (August 31) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team (0-3) traveled to Montclair State for day two of their quad-match, hosted by the Red Hawks. The Devils were sent home with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-7) loss against Vassar, as well as a 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-15) loss against Montclair State.
Vs. Vassar
Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, NJ) led the Devils with 13 assists and two aces, while first-year
Tayla O'Connor (Roxbury, NJ) tied her collegiate high of four kills from the previous day and also accounted for five digs in the match.
Set 1: Both teams started on offensive attack each evening the point after the serve, 4-4. Vassar was able to find a spot on the floor to place the ball for three service aces, as well as to connect on multiple kills to up the score to 10-4 early. FDU-Florham fought their way back to tie the set in three other occurrences but was unable to keep up as Vasser pulled out the 25-19 score to end set one.
Set 2: In set two, FDU-Florham was able to tie the set in the first twelve points, 6-6, but was unable to defend the offensive run Vassar unleashed on the Devils to go up on a 10-0 run. FDU slowed the pace of the Brewers with an offensive 13-4 run to close the score within one point, 20-19. Only one additional point was scored by the Devils before Vassar closed the set with five straight points, 25-20.
Set 3: The Brewers saw multiple offensive opportunities and capitalized to score nine points before the Devils saw their second point of the set. FDU-Florham was only able to record five additional points before Vasser closed the set and the overall match by a score of 25-7.
Vs. Montclair State
O'Connor again tied her collegiate kill record with four kills, one ace, and seven digs against the Red Hawks. First-year
Genevieve Fitch (Charleston, SC) added to the Devils stat line with four kills and nine digs of her own.
Set 1: FDU-Florham owned the first two points of the set before Montclair State was able to find a 10-2 run. The Devils slowly kept climbing the scoreboard but was not able to keep up with the Red Hawks as they pulled to complete the set at a 25-12 score.
Set 2: The Red Hawks jumped out to another early lead as three straight kills brought the score to read 12-3 over the Devils.
O'Connor was responsible for two kills in the Devils' final six points of the set, leaving Montclair to overtake the score and the set, 25-9.
Set 3: In an attempt to take one set from Montclair State, FDU-Florham came out strong as they came within one point of the Red Hawks, 5-4, after a service ace from
Amaya Ocasio (Secaucus, NJ) and an attacking error by Montclair tied the set. The Devils came within one point after a kill from
Fitch, 9-8, but lost the momentum as a 16- 7 offensive movement helped boast the Red Hawks over FDU for the final set.
FDU-Florham will return to campus for their next contest on Thursday, September 5, when they host Ramapo for a 7:00 PM non-conference match.
