Women’s Tennis Edged in Season-Finale to Kean, 5-4

Madison, N.J. (May 2) – The FDU-Florham women's tennis team was edged in their final match of the year against Kean, 5-4 on Thursday evening.

The Devils had the advantage after the doubles portion of the match with a 2-1 lead. Maggie Cronkhite (Deep River, Conn.) and Ashley Gaetani (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) won their Doubles #1 match against Maria Torres and Selina Maisonett, 8-4, but Paula Vanegas (Union City, N.J.) and Rachel Kappelmier (Freehold, N.J.) fell to Grace Del Pino and Gigi Gutierrez, 8-3 in Doubles #2. Doubles # 3 was won by default by Giavana Caraccioli (Bound Brook, N.J.) and Melanie Perez (Union City, N.J.) as they had no one to face in that period.

The Cougars were able to flip the script in singles competition and took the 5-4 lead. In Singles #1, Del Pino beat Kappelmier, 6-0, 6-1. In Singles #2, Cronkhite was narrowly defeated by Torres, 7-5, 6-4. Gaetani won her second straight match in Singles #3 and closed out her tennis career with a win against Maisonett, 6-2, 6-0. Caraccioli dropped Singles #4 to Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-0. The deciding match was a three-set matchup between Emily Prachthauser (Morristown, N.J.) and Emily Lari. Prachthauser took set one, 7-5 but dropped set two, 7-5. Lari won the tiebreaker set, 10-5 to clinch the match win for Kean despite Perez winning Singles #6 by default due to no one to play.
