Madison, N.J. (April 9) – The FDU-Florham baseball team snapped a five-game skid on Tuesday afternoon as the Devils rolled past John Jay, 11-1 at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Namoli Ballpark.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) once again led the way for the Devils offensively when he hit three-for-four with two RBI, two doubles, and two runs scored. The Devils also saw hot bats from
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) who also went three-for-four with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base while
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, N.J.) collected two hits, an RBI, a double and a run scored.
The offense got going right away for Fairleigh Dickinson as they collected two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 advantage.
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) was walked during his first at bat and advanced to second on a single through the left side by
Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J). An RBI double to left center plated Rolli and sent Aber to third, where a sacrifice fly from
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) brought across the second run in the frame.
After a scoreless second inning, the Devils scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-0 lead. Hendershot led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single to the shortstop by Rolli. A double steal sent Rolli to second and Hendershot to third for Aber to score Hendershot on a sacrifice fly to right field and moved Rolli to third. Santos then hit an RBI single through the left side to score Rolli. A passed ball eventually moved Santos in position to score on an RBI double to left center by Giovenco for the final run of the inning.
Another three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth inning put FDU firmly in the driver's seat of the game with an 8-0 edge. Santos led off with a double down the left field line and was followed by Donovan who reach on an error by the third baseman. A sacrifice bunt by Giovenco moved both men into scoring position where a ground out RBI by
Zach Ganca (Merrick, N.J.) scored Santos and moved Donovan to third. A second straight RBI was tallied when
Mark Geist (Middlesex, N.J.) hit an RBI single to center field to score Donovan. Geist stole second and after
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) was walked during his at bat, Hendershot collected an RBI single through the left side to plate Geist.
John Jay's only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single through the left side to make the score 8-1. The Devils answered that run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Chippendale made it to third on a walk and a failed pick off attempt error that moved him two bases for Hendershot to hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Chippendale to make the score 9-1.
The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Devils that eventually gave them the 11-1 win.
Dominic Fallino (Miller Place, N.Y.) reach on an error by the second baseman in the lead off and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Giovenco.
Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, N.J.) was hit by pitch to give the Devils a bases-loaded situation where a fielder's choice RBI by
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored Fallino and on that some play, a throwing error from the second baseman allowed Giovenco to go from third to home for the final run of the game.
The Devils saw six guys got a chance on the mound today with five guys each seeing a strikeout during the game.
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, N.J.) got the start and pitched three innings, allowed five hits with no runs and struck out a batter.
Michael Dunay (Stockholm, N.J.) was awarded the win when in relief of Weippert. He pitched an inning and allowed no hits and now runs with a strikeout
Before the game, the Devils baseball program honored local police and fire departments for the third annual First Responders Game. Those represented today were the Madison Police and Fire Departments, Florham Park Police Department, Montgomery Twp. Police Department, Middlesex Twp. Police and Fire Department and the Morris County Sheriffs Office. Representatives from each department through out ceremonial first pitches before the game got underway.
FDU-Florham is set for another three-game MAC Freedom series this weekend, this time against #19 Misericordia that will start on Friday, April 12 in Dallas, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
