Baseball Drops Conference Doubleheader to Nationally Ranked Misericordia

Madison, N.J. (April 13) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (10-19, 3-11 MAC Freedom) dropped their MAC Freedom doubleheader to #19 Misericordia (19-8, 11-1 MAC Freedom), 9-2 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) each collected three hits between the two games. Two of Santo's hits were extra-base hits with a double and a triple while also scoring three runs. Giovenco drove in a run with an RBI in game one.

Game One

Misericordia got it going right away in the top of the first when an RBI single through the right side to take an early 1-0 lead. The Devils were able to nod the game back up in the bottom of the second when Santos tripled to right center and was plated right after on an RBI single through the left side by Giovenco to tie the game 1-1.

The Cougars retook the lead quickly in the top of the third with a three-run frame to hold a 4-1 advantage. Those runs were scored on a bases-load walk and a two-RBI single down the left field line.

The Devils cut into the lead in the bottom of the third frame to make the score 4-2 MU. Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) reached on a throwing error by the second baseman and stole second to put himself in scoring position where John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) drove him in on an RBI single up the middle.

Fairleigh Dickinson could not find any runs for the rest of the game however while Misericordia put five more runs on the board down the stretch with two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in seventh to take game one, 9-2.

Chris Kaponis (Burlinton Twp., N.J.) suffered the loss as the starter. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on four hits but struck out four batters.

Game Two

Once again, it was Misericordia who jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple to right center. The game was locked in defensively until the bottom of the fourth inning when FDU tied the game 1-1. Santos doubled to right field and advanced on a ground out from Giovenco. Nick Calabrese (Long Valley, N.J.) scored Santos from third base on an RBI single up the middle.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning once again gave the Cougars the edge, but once again the Devils answered in the bottom of the sixth inning to create a 2-2 stalemate. Santos notched his second hit of the game on a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. Another single up the middle, this time from Giovenco put Santos on third and he advanced second on the throw to try and get Santos out at third. Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) grounded out on his first at bat of the game but was able to get Santos across home plate on it for the game-tying run.

Once again though, FDU's offense could not produce down the stretch and runs in the seventh and ninth innings helped Misericordia take game two.

Nick Rizos (Wood Ridge, N.J.) got the start on the rubber in game two for the Devils. He pitched five innings, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four batters. In relief, it was Ben Cohen (Malibu, Calif.) who suffered the loss. He pitched an inning and gave up the go ahead run.

After Friday's cancellation, FDU-Florham will finish out their MAC Freedom series with #19 Misericordia tomorrow, Sunday, April 14 in Dallas, Pa. The game is slated for an 11:00am start.
