Center Valley, Pa. (April 7) – After a win on Friday, DeSales (12-13, 7-5 MAC Freedom) was able to complete the MAC Freedom series sweep against as they downed FDU-Florham baseball team (9-17, 3-9 MAC Freedom) 5-4 in seven innings and 8-2 in nine innings on Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) combined for three hits in both games and scored a run while
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) also collected three total hits and an RBI.
Game One
Game one started off with the Bulldogs scoring a pair of runs from an RBI double down the left line and a ground out RBI to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
FDU was able to answer back and tie the game up 2-2 in the top of the third inning.
Mark Geist (Middlesex, N.J.) struck out in the lead off spot but reached on a wild pitch.
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) singled to right field and moved Geist to third. Hendershot plated Geist on an RBI single to right field and a fielder's choice RBI from
Nick Calabrese (Long Valley, N.J.) that scored Chippendale.
The Devils took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Santos led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. After he advanced to third on a ground out by
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.), Santos scored on an RBI single up the middle by
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) to take a 3-2 lead.
The Devils extended their lead in the top of the sixth to 4-2 on a Chippendale RBI double to left center that scored Geist, but DeSales answered back with a sacrifice fly that put the score at 4-3.
In the final frame of game one, The Bulldogs scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly and an error brought the game-winning run across the plate to give DeSales the 5-4 game one win.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., N.J.) got the start and went the distance in the game in the loss. He only allowed one earned run of the five that came across in the game and struck out five batters.
Game Two
Game two started off better for Fairleigh Dickinson when
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) tripled to left field and scored on a passed ball to give FDU a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, DeSales scored two runs on a two-run RBI single to left field to take a 2-1 lead. The Devils tied the game on an RBI double to left field by Rolli that plated Santos, but four runs in the bottom of the frame for the Bulldogs opened the game open for them as they took a 6-2 lead.
DeSales capped off the game with an RBI single to left field in the fifth inning and an RBI single to center field to complete the sweep against the Devils with an 8-2 win.
Eddie Appollina (Annandale, N.J.) got the start in game two but suffered the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five batters.
FDU-Florham returns to Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark for their next game as they host John Jay for a 3:30pm start. The Devils will also be honoring First Responders before the game.
