Softball Bounces Back Against Delaware Valley to Claim Fourth-Seed in MAC Freedom Playoffs

Madison, NJ (April 27) – For their last regular season MAC Freedom doubleheader header, the FDU-Florham Softball team bounced back after losing game one to the Delaware Valley Aggies by a score of 5-0, with a 7-2 victory in game two to help claim the fourth seed in the 2024 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship.

Game 1:
Through the first two innings, both teams barely had connections with the ball as Delaware Valley only made contact with the ball for a hit in each inning. The Aggies in the top of the third inning became much more comfortable on McManus field as they were able to score three RBI from a double to left center field.

FDU-Florham found their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) sent the ball through the left side for a single.

The fifth inning for Delaware Valley was productive on offense as another two RBI were brought in with a double to the center fielder. The Devils made connections with the ball in the fifth inning as well but still were not able to bring anyone home for a run.

The Devils gave it one last effort as Kacie Centineo (Waldwick, NJ) singled up the middle for the lone hit of the sixth inning as well as the remainder of the game, resulting in a 5-0 win for Delaware Valley.

FDU-Florham saw Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) (3-4)  in the circle for all seven innings and recorded four strikeouts on thirty-three batters before receiving the loss. Delaware Valley has Maddie Karns (12-8) pitch the entirety of the game, collecting three strikeouts on twenty-nine batters.

Game 2:

With a fire burning within, FDU-Florham started the scoring of game two in the first inning with an RBI from Riley Signor (Media, PA).

Delaware Valley did not find their offensive rhythm until the third inning when they tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double down the left field line. The Devils reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning after DiSanto singled to center field and sent the runners on second and third base home, 3-1.

FDU-Florham extended their lead by one run in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single from Centineo. The Aggies swung for a single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning in an effort to close the scoring gap but were not able to as the Devils enlarged the score differential to six runs after another RBI from DiSanto and two RBI from Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ).

The Aggies gave it a final effort in the seventh inning as they connected for three hits but only brought one runner home for their second run of the game. The Devils' defense was able to hold strong for the final three outs to help claim the 7-2 victory as well as the fourth seed in the 2024 MAC Freedom Championship.

First-year Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) (11-8) recorded her eleventh win of the season after throwing 135 pitches through seven innings, including a series-high of eight strikeouts on thirty-five batters. Kenzie Boyd (6-5) threw three innings for the Aggies before receiving the loss with one strikeout.

FDU-Florham will begin their postseason journey on Thursday, May 2 when they partake in the MAC Freedom Championship. The fourth-seeded Devils will be playing against first-seeded Lebanon Valley. A time and location is still to be announced.
